LANZHOU, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang urged the restoration of people's livelihood in the quake-hit regions during his visit in northwestern Gansu Province between Jan. 15 and Jan. 17.     Some areas of Gansu were shattered by the devastating May 12 earthquake centered in Wenchuan of neighboring Sichuan Province last year. BRUSSELS, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- China and the European Union (EU) on Friday vowed to further enhance their partnership and deepen cooperation in various fields.     In a joint declaration issued after Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to Brussels, the two sides emphasized the importance of the strategic partnership in face of globalization and the current volatile international situation.     The document says that the China-EU relationship has gone beyond the bilateral domain and is increasingly of global strategic significance. "Both sides are of the view that it is imperative to further improve the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership, which reflects the common wishes of the two sides and are in their interests," says the declaration. Bush about bilateral relations and major international issues of common concern.     The two leaders exchanged congratulations on achievements that have been made in the development of bilateral relations since the forging of diplomatic ties between China and the U.S. 30 years ago.     They expressed the hope that a series of events to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations would be successful.     President Hu agreed with Bush's positive remarks on China-U.S. relations and hailed his efforts to develop a constructive and cooperative Sino-U.S. relationship.     In the new historical period of time, China and the United States, through their joint efforts, will surely be able to stay firm in the general direction of the China-U.S. constructive and cooperative relationship and promote sound, stable, all-round and in-depth development of bilateral ties, Hu noted.     Bush, for his part, said China and the United States have engaged in good cooperation over the past 30 years which deserves congratulation.     The U.S. president said he was pleased that he has conducted satisfactory cooperation with President Hu during his presidency.     On the Middle East situation, Hu said China is seriously concerned about escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and worsening of the volatile situation in the Middle East and is deeply worried about the humanitarian crisis taking place in the Gaza Strip.     China calls on all the parties concerned to stop military operation and armed conflicts, promote the relaxation of tension in the region and create conditions for a solution to the conflict by political means, Hu said.

BEIJING, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said on Wednesday that increased environment protection efforts would help significantly to boost domestic demand and open new economic growth points. China would continue to make environmental protection a priority to benefit the people and ensure a stable economy, he told the annual meeting of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED).     China faced difficult tasks in protecting its environment as itwas the world's biggest developing country with huge economic growth potential. NEW YORK, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)on Monday kicked off its trading session with a special ceremony marking the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States.     In a symbolic move, Stephen A. Orlins, president of the U.S. National Committee on U.S.-China Relations (NCUSCR), rang the market's Opening Bell. He was accompanied by Dr. Henry Kissinger, a key trailblazer and eyewitness for the normalization of U.S.- China relations.     The two countries formally established their diplomatic ties on Jan. 1, 1979.     Zhang Yesui, China's UN permanent representative, said the bilateral relations of China and United States is of great importance, not only to the two peoples, but also to the world peace and security, and the global economic development.     Dr. Kissinger, who visited China in 1971, said he is optimistic about the future of the bilateral relations of China and United States. "It is now a pillar of the international order. And peace and prosperity of the world depend closely on the Sino-U.S. relations," he said.     Talking on areas of further co-operation between the two countries, Dr. Kissinger said first of all China and United States should develop a common solution on how to overcome the current international financial and economic crisis, and develop a program of collaboration to tackle the issue.     And "on the key problems that exist in the world -- proliferation, energy, climate change, environment -- China and United States can be a key to a solution of these problems," he said, "So the strategic dialogues between China and United States should not only continue, but be reinforced and strengthened."     NCUSCR President Orlins called the NYSE celebrating ceremony "a real testimony, not only to the historical events, but also to how far we have come."     "When we established diplomatic relations exactly 30 years ago on January 1st, we could not have imagined that we would have Chinese companies listed on the NYSE, whose market capital is in excess of 800 billion U.S. dollars," Orlins said, "It is just remarkable."     Currently, there are 41 companies from Chinese mainland listed with NYSE, the premier U.S. listing venue for non-U.S. companies.     Duncan L. Niederauer, CEO of NYSE Euronext, told Xinhua that he has taken the relations with China as one of his most important initiatives during his years as chief executive. He also suggestedthe Chinese companies to "stay the course" and stick to the good business when dealing with the global financial crisis and economic downturn.     "There is always years like this in global markets where it is a very very tough ride. I think there are a lot of terrific companies in China. They either already listed or are in the queueto be listed, and we're gonna continue to support them through the ups and downs," Niederauer said, "I believe their fortunes will improve overtime and we just need a long-term outlook of it."     NYSE was the first foreign exchange to receive approval to open a representative office in China. After the opening of its Beijing office on Dec. 11, 2007, NYSE has signed memorandums of understanding with China's Dalian Commodity Exchange and Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange in co-operations in the futures and options markets.     Among the guests to the Monday ceremony were Peng Keyu, Chinese consul-general in New York, and Jan Berris, vice president of the NCUSCR.

TAIPEI, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- The panda pair given by the Chinese mainland to Taiwan made their debut at the Taipei Zoo Saturday evening, meeting a select group of visitors including Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou and Kuomintang Honorary Chairman Lien Chan.     "It's an honor for Taiwan to breed the two pandas, as there are only about 1,600 pandas in the world," said Ma, at the ceremony to inaugurate the new enclosure for the pandas.     About 500 orphans and children from poor families were invited by the city government to be the first visitors to the panda pair.     "It's a time for family reunions at Spring Festival, but some children have lost their families and others cannot afford to go to the zoo. BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- China will take measures to boost economic and social development in Tibetan regions in four provinces, according to a notice about a meeting chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao.     Wednesday's executive meeting of the State Council, the country's Cabinet, discussed how to support development in the Tibetan regions of Qinghai, Sichuan, Yunnan and Gansu provinces.     Tibetan regions in these areas are autonomous where Tibetans and people of other nationalities live together. The regions are the important plateau ecological barrier that cover the head-stream area of major rivers, such as the Yellow, Yangtze and Lancang.     The ecological environment in these areas are fragile with natural disasters occurring frequently. Infrastructure remained less developed, which hindered the development in these areas, the meeting said.     Measures should be taken to protect and build the ecological environment and improve people's living standard in these areas, and to make the income of urban and rural residents approach or reach the average level in western China by 2012 and approach national average by 2020.     Moreover, public services including education, public health and medical services should be improved in these areas, and infrastructure construction should be carried out to better support development.
