ROME, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Ambassador Sun Yuxi announced Chinese culture year in Italy at a press conference at the Chinese embassy here Friday.     The culture year, which follows Italian year in China in 2006, will officially start in September.     "The Chinese culture year in Italy is set to be a central obelisk supporting further exchange between the two countries. It is a crucial project on which both governments have long been working," said Sun.     The ambassador said nine Chinese central government departments and 22 local authorities would be involved in organizing more than100 events all over Italy, including performances of traditional Chinese musical bands, dances and operas. BEIJING, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top political advisor Jia Qinglin attended a symposium here on Wednesday to mark the 60th anniversary of the uprising of two air carriers in Hong Kong in 1949.     On Nov. 9, 1949, a total of 12 aircraft from the carriers flew from Hong Kong to Beijing and Tianjin on the Chinese mainland during the uprising, a move embraced by the New China. Mao Zedong called it "a very patriotic action of great significance."     Du Qinglin, head of the United Front Work Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said the precious spirit of the uprising should be inherited and promoted, to encourage all the Chinese to make unswerving contributions to the rejuvenation of the nation.

HOHHOT, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Police said Tuesday they had shot and killed an escaped prisoner and apprehended three others in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.     The four escaped on Saturday from the No. 2 Prison in Hohhot, capital of Inner Mongolia, after killing a prison guard, said a spokesman from the regional public security department.     Acting on information from local residents, police surrounded the men in Helin County early Tuesday, after they had hijacked a motor tricycle and taken the woman driver hostage.     Police shot dead Gao Bo, who resisted arrest and injured a police officer with knife, said the spokesman. Police searched thousands of hotels, nightclubs and Internet bars, questioned 47,500 people and stopped 24,600 vehicles.     The four prisoners were on the run for only 66 hours before they were apprehended.     "We appreciate the local residents' help in hunting the prisoners," said Zhao Liping, head of the public security department of the region." SEOUL, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping put forward a four-point plan to cement China-South Korea ties when he met South Korean Prime Minister Chung Un Chan here on Thursday.     Xi said China and the South Korea were neighbors and the relationship had been promoted since they established diplomatic ties in 1992. The exchanges of the visits by the two heads of states last year upgraded the relations to strategic and cooperative partnership, which benefited both countries and helped promote regional peace, stability and prosperity.     Xi's proposal to foster the Sino-ROK relationship was:     -- To enhance high-level contact and political trust:     The two countries should also increase exchanges between the governments, parliaments and parties.
