BEIJING, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- Even as some Chinese women claim discrimination at the workplace, a government blue paper says education has been important in narrowing the income gap between men and women.The blue paper, "China's educational development report 2009," released by the Social Sciences Academic Press at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, a major government think tank, says women who have received higher education suffer less gender discrimination at work."With the advancement of women's education level, the income gap between men and women has gradually narrowed," the blue paper said.According to 2005 government figures, the ratio of average income between women and men with junior high school diploma was 68 percent; 78 percent for senior high school diploma; 80 percent for junior college certificates; and 83 percent for college education.The paper said gender discrimination in employment is increasingly obvious in China, with even the employment prospects for female college graduates serious, let alone women without college education.The paper said society, employers, schools and women themselves should make efforts to change gender inequality in employment.China has broadened educational opportunities by popularizing higher education and granting all children equal and free, nine-year compulsory education.

VLADIVOSTOK, Russia, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Sunday encouraged Chinese and Russian youths to make joint efforts in helping push forward the friendly bilateral ties.Xi, during his visit to the Confucius Institute of Far Eastern National University here, called on youths of the two countries to realize the aim with their youthful passion and wisdom.At the institute, which was founded in 2006, Xi watched an exhibition showing its achievement, attended a Chinese calligraphy lesson taken by Russian students, and inaugurated a bronze statue of Confucius.Xi also paid a visit to the "Ocean" all Russia children's center, where hundreds of Chinese pupils and middle-school students, victims of a devastating major earthquake in 2008, had attended a rehabilitation program.The massive earthquake struck southwestern China's Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces on May 12, 2008, leaving some 70,000 people dead and 18,000 others missing.Xi recalled that the Russian government and people provided timely assistance to victims of the quake and President Dmitry Medvedev later invited more than 1,500 Chinese pupils and middle-school students from the quake-hit areas to Russia for rehabilitation.The Chinese vice president conveyed the sincere greetings and best wishes of these Chinese children to their Russian peers in the center, and, on behalf of the Chinese government and people, expressed his heartfelt thanks to the staff of the center.Xi said Chinese and Russian youths are the builders and successors of the future undertaking of the Sino-Russia friendship.He said the "Year of Chinese Language" would open in Russia in several days, expressing his hope that Russian youths would actively take part in related activities, and learn Chinese language, history and culture.Xi arrived in Vladivostok Saturday for a five-day official visit to Russia.

PARIS, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Nuclear power should be developed with due regulations and in an orderly way thanks to its strict requirement for human resources, technology, security and quality, a Chinese official said Monday here at the international conference on civilian use of nuclear energy.Nuclear power, a clean, safe and economic energy, "plays an important role in energy conservation, environment protection and the strive to cope with climate change," Deputy Director of China' s National Energy Administration Wu Yin said, adding it has became "a major choice to develop economy and optimize energy structure" for many developing countries.Speaking to representatives from about 60 countries at the headquarters of the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development, Wu said that changing the mode of energy development, optimizing the energy mix and reducing carbon emission is now a shared aspiration of the world.According to him, China has accelerated the construction of nuclear power stations in recent years. BEIJING, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police nationwide were urged Friday to tighten security and step up safety overhaul during the Chinese Lunar New Year and be "ready to handle emergencies to prevent serious accidents."A circular from the Ministry of Public Security told local police authorities to increase scrutiny of fireworks parties, trade fairs, lantern shows, and temple fairs during the Spring Festival holiday which starts Saturday.It said the police should assist in keeping public and traffic order around large events' venues and be ready to handle crime and emergencies.Efforts should be made to strengthen security measures around train stations.
