BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader Li Changchun has pledged to strengthen cooperation between Chinese and foreign media and to facilitate foreign media coverage of China. Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks Friday evening when he met the heads of 10 major media organizations attending the World Media Summit in Beijing.     The Chinese government has been promoting media development and supporting Chinese media in enhancing exchanges and cooperation with foreign counterparts in news, human resources, information technologies and business development, he said. BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC) and Kuomintang (KMT) both expressed wish to promote cross-Strait trust and common understanding as Ma Ying-jeou took the position as the KMT chairman on Saturday.     The CPC Central Committee Saturday congratulated the Kuomintang(KMT) on the convocation of its18th congress, expecting the two parties to deepen mutual trust, increase exchanges and expand common understanding.     In a reply, the KMT Central Committee said they will work with the CPC for improving trust and mutual benefits, in a bid to improve the welfare of people on both sides.     At the congress, the KMT again included the "common aspirations and prospects for peace and development across the Taiwan Strait, "reached between the CPC and KMT in 2005, in its political guideline. Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou assumed the position of the island's ruling party chairman at Kuomintang's 18th plenary congress Saturday morning    Wu Yongping, deputy director of the Institute of Taiwan Studies, Tsinghua University, told Xinhua that this gave a positive signal that the KMT pledged again to further development of cross-Strait relations , which is helpful for further dialogues between the CPC and the KMT.     At the congress, Ma appointed Lien Chan and Wu Poh-hsiung as KMT honorary chairmen. They would assist Ma on cross-Strait affairs and external exchanges, according to Ma.     Hu Jintao, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, congratulated Lien Chan on continuing to be KMT honorary chairman and Wu Poh-hsiung on taking the position as honorary chairman.     The two responded with commitments to peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.     Lien said in a statement that since the two sides resumed systematic talks based on the 1992 Consensus, peace and stability across the Strait have been greatly enhanced and people's welfare improved.     "We should work even harder to consolidate the five-point common aspirations and prospects," Lien said.     Wu also noted that the two parties should work together for peace and development with "sincerity and goodwill."     Zhu Weidong, deputy director fo the Institute of Taiwan Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said, "Through the congress, we can see the KMT will not change its stance on easing cross-Strait relations, promoting exchanges with the CPC and carrying on the platform between the two parties."

BEIJING, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here Tuesday China would not change the orientation of its stimulating economic policy as the country is at a critical stage in the recovery of the economy. Wen said, when meeting with World Bank President Robert Zoellick, that China's government would continue to pursue proactive fiscal and moderately easy monetary policies.     "We will not change the orientation of our policy," Wen said.     Wen said China would fully implement and continue to enhance and perfect policy in response to the international financial crisis to achieve the goals of economic and social development. The Ministry of Commerce predicts China's exports will slow their decline or even grow on a monthly basis.     "The macro-economic policy and measures that China adopted in response to the international financial crisis have been proved inconformity with reality, prompt, forceful and effective," Wen said.     Wen said the world economy was now showing signs of stabilizing, but an all-round recovery would be a slow, difficult and complicated process. It would require long-term, concerted efforts by every country in the world in strengthening dialogue, coordinating policy and deepening cooperation.     Wen said imbalances in the global economy were rooted in disparity in development. He urged the international community to pay special attention to difficulties faced by developing countries, especially the least developed ones. He said the gap should be lessened by increasing aid, writing off debts, opening markets and transferring technology.     Wen said China was ready to strengthen cooperation with the World Bank and make new contributions to achieving the UN Millennium Goals and sustainable development of the world.     This is the third time Zoellick has visited China since becoming World Bank President. Following his arrival Monday afternoon, Zoellick exchanged views on the major topics of his agenda in Beijing, the international financial crisis and climate change, with Chinese officials. Besides Beijing, Zoellick will visit Anhui province in east China.     Zoellick said the World Bank was willing to develop cooperation with China in areas such as international development aid, reform of international financial organizations and climate change.

BEIJING, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC) central leadership vowed Friday to enhance intra-Party democracy by improving Party congress and election systems.     Less than two weeks ahead of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC), the 17th CPC Central Committee made a consensus at its fourth plenary session which ended Friday, calling for bettering the democratic decision-making mechanism within the Party in order to maintain the CPC's centralization and unity.     After the four-day close-door meeting, the CPC Central Committee agreed in a communique upon pushing forward intra-Party democracy, which allows broad representation of Party-wide wills and propositions, and, subsequently, drives people's democracy.     Hu Jintao, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, said at the 17th CPC National Congress on Oct. 15, 2007, "We will expand intra-Party democracy to develop people's democracy and increase intra-Party harmony to promote social harmony." PYONGYANG, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Kim Jong Il, top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), held talks here on Monday and reached important consensus on China-DPRK relations and the promotion of a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.     Premier Wen extended sincere greetings and best wishes to Kim on behalf of Chinese President Hu Jintao.     The hard-earned friendship and friendly cooperative relations achieved by the joint efforts of several generations of the two countries conform to the aspiration of the two peoples, Wen said, adding that the two nations should pass on the friendship from generation to generation.     China is willing to work with the DPRK to maintain high-level exchanges, deepen pragmatic cooperation, strengthen coordination on major issues, and push forward the good-neighborly and friendly cooperative relations, he added.     Kim asked Wen to relay his greetings to Chinese President Hu. BRUSSELS, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met Thursday with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso on bilateral ties, vowing to enhance cooperation between the two sides.     Xi, who congratulated Barroso for his reelection, said China appreciated his efforts in the past five years on boosting development of the comprehensive and strategic partnership between China and the European Union. China believes, too, that the bilateral ties would advance further in a healthy and stable way within the new term of Barroso, Xi said.     Xi said China and the EU, who have formed a pattern of comprehensive, wide-range and multilevel cooperation, have become two important forces to help shape the future international structure into a multipolar world.     Xi put forward a three-point proposal to further strengthen bilateral relations between China and the EU. WUHAN, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- East Star Airlines, the debt-laden private airline based in central China's Wuhan City, officially went bankrupt after its restructuring application was rejected Thursday.     The Intermediate People's Court in Wuhan City said the plan submitted by the East Star Group and ChinaEquity was unfeasible and failed to meet the conditions for a legal restructuring.     ChinaEquity, an investment company founded in 1999 in Beijing, had promised to invest 200 million to 300 million yuan (29 million to 44 million U.S. dollars) for the restructuring plan.     However, it did not specify the source of the funding and failed to provide certificates and documents, and lacked measures to protect creditors, the court said.     The court said East Star Airlines had no operating income in 2008, while ChinaEquity recorded 470,000 yuan in main business income and a 187,477-yuan deficit last year. BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- China is ready to advance cooperation with Turkey in combating terrorism to better fulfill the common task of safeguarding national unification and territorial integrity and opposing separatism, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said here Sunday.     Yang made the remarks when meeting in Beijing with Turkish State Minister Zafer Caglayan, who paid the visit to China as special envoy of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The visit "indicated Turkey's political will to further its relationship with China," Yang said during the one-hour meeting, adding China attached great importance to promoting the ties with Turkey.     China was ready to strengthen the bilateral relations on the basis of universally recognized norms of international relations, he said. It had a profound political background.     The riot, taking place on July 5 in capital of the northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, left 197 people dead and more than 1,600 others injured.     Yang said the "East Turkestan" separatist forces' nature and harm was disclosed in the riot as it seriously jeopardized the lives, property of the Chinese people of various ethnic groups, and the local stability.     The measures taken by the Chinese government to deal with the incident according to law won wholehearted support of the local people of all ethnic groups, Yang said.     Caglayan reiterated Turkey's adherence to the one-China policy and its respect for China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.     The two peoples had a long history of friendship, and the two countries enjoyed "sound cooperation" in areas such as fighting terrorism, Caglayan said, adding Turkey would like to keep close contact with China in this area.     "Turkey will endeavor to develop a strong relationship with China, through deepening bilateral cooperation," he said.     Caglayan, who arrived in Beijing Saturday, also said the success of Turkish President Abdullah Gul's visit to China in June had exerted profound influence on the bilateral relations.     During his four-day stay in China, Caglayan was also scheduled to meet Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and visit Xinjiang, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry.
