BEIJING, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Saturday paid visits to three best-known senior intellectuals living in Beijing, honoring his own promise to call on these over-90-year elders once every year.     The three were linguist Ji Xianlin, founder of China's space industry Qian Xuesen, and "China's Madame Curie" He Zehui, who is the widow of China's Father of A-bomb Qian Sanqiang (1913-92). Ji turns 97 on August 6.     Ji, a former deputy president of the prestigious Beijing University, is known for his translation works and fruitful study on Sanscrit and other ancient Indian languages, speaks good English and German, and can read French and Russian.     In their talks, Wen exchanged views with Ji on issues like the relief efforts for the deadly May 12 Earthquake, foreign language education, and the upcoming Olympic Games in Beijing.     "Our history has always witnessed disasters like floods, droughts and earthquakes, but our nation has never been collapsed, and quite the contrary, (our nation) has become stronger and stronger after these disasters," said the premier, who is also member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau.     Ji agreed with Wen and he said in reply, "It is same for a nation and a person. Disasters train will of a person and a nation, as well." Qian was then president of the China Association for Science and Technology.     Being a geological expert himself, Wen had supported Qian for his strategic proposals on the development of sand industry, mathematics, and chemical industry. Wen even organized some experts to assist Qian in research projects.     In their meeting, the premier informed the scientist of the country's progress in space industry, such as the forthcoming launch of the Shenzhou-7 manned spacecraft, the Second Phase of the Moon-orbiting Program, and the country's ambitious plan to build large passenger aircraft.     Wen attributed China's achievements in science and technology to the decades-long efforts made by the elder generation Chinese scientists.     The premier echoed Qian that China still lags behind in many key sectors. "We have to be diligent," Wen said. Once, Qian was invited to Zhongnanhai, the office compound of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, in central Beijing, to acknowledge Wen of the latest development of the country's nuclear industry.     Wen talked with He about her daily life and health. The premier also recalled the night when he went to say farewell to the body of Qian.     Wen praised He for her simple life style and outstanding contribution to the nation. "The younger generation scientists should learn from you," he said to the senior woman scientist.

CHENGDU, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Saturday night expressed gratitude to foreign countries and people who have offered aid since a major earthquake struck the country.     "On behalf of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the State Council and the Central Military Commission, I express heartfelt thanks to the foreign governments and international friends that have contributed to our quake-relief work," Hu said. Chinese President Hu Jintao Saturday night speaks at a meeting on rescue and relief work of the earthquake, expressing gratitudes to foreign countries and people who have offered aid since a major earthquake struck the country.Hu, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks at a meeting on rescue and relief work after the 7.8-magnitude earthquake ravaged southwestern Sichuan Province Monday afternoon.     Hu also conveyed his greetings to the government officials and people in the disaster-hit areas, the People's Liberation Army (PLA), armed police, militia, reservists, public security staff, medical personnel, journalists and all people making "selfless devotions" to the quake-devastated areas.     More than 200 rescuers from Japan, Russia, the Republic of Korea (ROK) and Singapore are in Sichuan to help with the rescue and disaster relief work.     A 61-year-old woman was saved alive Saturday evening by Russian rescuers after being buried for up to 127 hours in the rubble, the first survivor found by foreign rescuers.     The earthquake, the worst in decades, had caused 28,881 deaths nationwide as of 2 p.m. Saturday. Many countries have offered help including making donations and sending rescue teams.     QUAKE RELIEF ATOP GOVERNMENT WORK AGENDA     In the meeting, Hu urged local governments at all levels and relevant central government departments to take quake relief as the most important and pressing issue in their work.     He called for unremitting efforts to search for and rescue the trapped people though more than five days had passed after the disaster.     "We should put people first and saving people's lives is still the top priority of the relief work," he said.     Troops, armed police, and public security personnel should reach villages and search every collapsed buildings to save the people, he said.     Hu also called for all-out efforts to save and cure injured survivors, urging to transfer them to hospitals with better conditions.     Hygiene measures in the quake-hit areas should be beefed up to prevent the spread of diseases, and more medical experts should be sent to these areas to help prevent and control possible epidemics, Hu said.     During the meeting, Hu expressed his concern for the people in the quake-devastated areas, calling for arrangements of supplies of daily necessities to meet people's demands.     Food, clothes, drinking water and temporary shelters must be ensured, he emphasized.     Hu also underscored social stability in quake hit areas, ordering officials to give considerate comfort and condolence to people to ensure a peaceful social environment.     "We must keep highly alert" against aftershocks and avoid further losses, he warned.     Hu also called for tightened monitoring and prevention measures on geological disasters such as landslides and mud-rock flows.     He said early planning is important for reconstruction as the country now faces a challenging task in this regard.     He also ordered early preparations and arrangements to deal with the issues of orphans, seniors and disabled.     The meeting was presided over by Vice Premier Hui Liangyu, who urged implementation of the overall quake-relief strategies of the central government.

BEIJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese diplomat on Thursday urged developed and developing countries to work on common policies and cooperation to address the global challenges such as climate change and food security.     "China values dialogue between the Group of Eight (G8) and developing countries", Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Jieyi said at a briefing on President Hu Jintao's attendance at the Outreach Session of the G8 Summit.     At the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, Hu will attend the Outreach Session of the G8 Summit in Japan from July 7 to 9.     The G8, comprising the United States, Britain, Germany, Canada, France, Italy, Japan and Russia, holds a summit each year.     Liu said the issues to be discussed would be "important" and "urgent", and he hoped the meeting would promote the dialogue between South and North, step up multilateral cooperation to resolve global issues and ensure lasting peace and common prosperity. And we manage this," said Gutierrez.    He mentioned that the two-way trade volume between the two countries had grown to 380 billion dollars last year from only 4 billion dollars when the JCCT mechanism was initially established in 1983.    During Tuesday's talks, the two sides reached consensus on a wide range of issues, including intellectual property protection, medical equipment acquisition and information security, officials said.    Ahead of this, five bilateral agreements were signed by senior officials from the two sides in areas like agricultural cooperation, food safety, trade statistics and rural information and communications technology development.    The Chinese side also announced to lift bird flu-related ban on poultry products from seven U.S. states including New York, and conditionally resume imports of American beef, while the U.S. side expressed its stance against trade protectionism and promised to push for the lifting of trade barriers against some Chinese products like see food, fruit and woodcraft.    Tuesday's meeting marked the 25th anniversary of the China-U.S. JCCT commission, a high-level government-to-government dialogue seeking to open market opportunities and resolve trade disputes between the two countries.    Wang was leading a big delegation of senior officials from the Ministry of Commerce, the Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Agriculture and other ministries for the event.

BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- The government has cut back on import taxes on spare parts of large equipment and canceled the import tariff exemption on some complete sets.     The adjustments were made to support the domestic manufacturing of large equipment, said the Ministry of Finance.     Taxes levied on domestic enterprises for importing key spare parts of large equipment, including ultra- and extra-high voltage transmission equipment and transformers, large petro-chemical equipment and large coal-chemical equipment, would be refunded and injected into the enterprises as investment from the nation, it said.     The policy applied to imports after Jan. 1, 2008, depending on the date of declaration of imports.     In the meantime, the import of some complete sets of equipment by enterprises approved after Sept. 1, 2008 would no longer enjoy the tax exemption. Both domestic and foreign-funded projects are subject to the new policy, the ministry said.     Imports of such equipment by enterprises approved before Sept. 1 would continue to enjoy the previous tax policies until March 1,2009.
