Zhu still remembers what the institute was like when she first arrived. "Inside the building were intertwined spider webs and rats jumped out of a drawer when I opened one in the office," she said. "It was a difficult environment to conduct experiments, not to mention research."
Zhou made the remarks at a seminar themed "Sino-German Economic Relations: Risks and Opportunities", co-organized by Koerber-Stiftung and the China Center for International Economic Exchanges (CCIEE) in Berlin on Friday. Zhou now serves as president of the China Society for Finance and Banking and adviser to the CCIEE.
Zhu and her three kids were rescued from the building, but died shortly after in hospital.
