BEIJING, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's foreign trade in 2009 dropped 13.9 percent from a year earlier to 2.21 trillion U.S. dollars and its trade surplus last year slid 34.2 percent year on year to 196.1 billion U.S. dollars, according to figures released Sunday by the General Administration of Customs (GAC).     In breakdown, China's exports in 2009 stood at 1.2 trillion U.S. dollars, down 16 percent from in 2008, and imports reached 1.01 trillion U.S. dollars, down 11.2 percent from a year earlier, said the GAC.     In December 2009, monthly trade amounted to 243 billion U.S. dollars, which represented a year-on-year increase of 32.7 percent and a month-to-month rise of 16.7 percent.     Last month, China's exports were worth 130.7 billion U.S. dollars, up 17.7 percent from a year earlier. December's imports hit record monthly high to reach 112.3 billion U.S. dollars, up 55.9 percent from the same period of 2008, according to the GAC.

BEIJING, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has urged to improve taxation regulations to boost economic development and better ensure people's livelihood.     Li made the remarks when visiting the State Administration of Taxation on Thursday. Taxation is a major measure to pool financial revenue and boost social and economic development, and it also plays an important role in adjusting income distribution and improving people's livelihood, Li said. BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States singed a joint statement here Tuesday after talks between Chinese President Hu Jintao and his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama, agreeing that "the transition to a green and low-carbon economy is essential."     Both China and the United States believed the clean energy industry will provide vast opportunities for citizens of both countries in the years ahead, said the statement signed during Obama' s first visit to China since taking office in January.     According to the statement, the two sides welcomed significant steps forward to advance policy dialogue and practical cooperation on climate change, energy and the environment, building on the China-U.S. Memorandum of Understanding to Enhance Cooperation on Climate Change, Energy and Environment announced at the first round of China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogues in July and formally signed during Obama' s visit.     The statement said both sides recognized the importance of the Ten Year Framework on Energy and Environment Cooperation (TYF) and are committed to strengthening cooperation in promoting clean air, water, transportation, electricity, and resources conservation.     Through a new China-U.S. Energy Efficiency Action Plan under the TYF, both countries "will work together to achieve cost-effective energy efficiency improvement in industry, buildings and consumer products through technical cooperation, demonstration and policy exchanges," said the statement.     Noting both countries' significant investment in energy efficiency, the two Presidents underscored the enormous opportunities to create jobs and enhance economic growth brought by energy savings.     The two countries welcomed the signing of the Protocol Between the Ministry of Science and Technology, National Energy Administration of the People's Republic of China and the Department of Energy of the United States of America on a Clean Energy Research Center, according to the document.     The Center will facilitate joint research and development on clean energy by scientists and engineers from both countries. It will have one headquarters in each country, with public and private funding of at least 150 million U.S. dollars over five years split evenly between the two countries. Priority topics to be addressed will include energy efficiency in buildings, clean coal (including carbon capture and sequestration), and clean vehicles.     The two sides welcomed the launch of China-U.S. Electric Vehicles Initiative designed to put millions of electric vehicles on the roads of both countries in the years ahead, the statement said.     Building on significant investments in electric vehicles in both the United States and China, the two governments announced a program of joint demonstration projects in more than a dozen cities, along with work to develop common technical standards to facilitate rapid scale-up of the industry, the statement said, adding that the two sides agreed that their countries share a strong common interest in the rapid deployment of clean vehicles.     About 21st century coal technologies, the two countries agreed to promote cooperation on large-scale carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) demonstrations projects and begin work immediately on the development, deployment, diffusion and transfer of CCS technology. The two sides welcomed recent agreements between Chinese and U.S. companies, universities and research institutions to cooperate on CCS and more efficient coal technologies.     With regard to joint efforts on tackling the climate change, the two sides welcomed the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the National Development and Reform Commission of China and Environmental Protection Agency of the United States to Build Capacity to Address Climate Change.     The statement said the two sides welcomed the launch of a China-U.S. Renewable Energy Partnership, through which the two countries will chart a pathway to wide-scale deployment of wind, solar, advanced bio-fuels and a modern electric power grid in both countries and cooperate in designing and implementing the policy and technical tools necessary to make that vision possible.     Shared confidence on the bilateral cooperation in this field was expressed by the statement, which said that given the combined market size of the two countries, accelerated deployment of renewable energy in China and the United States can significantly reduce the cost of these technologies globally.     On the promotion of the peaceful use of nuclear energy, the two sides agreed to consult with one another in order to explore such approaches--including assurance of fuel supply and cradle-to-grave nuclear fuel management so that countries can access peaceful nuclear power while minimizing the risks of proliferation.

GENEVA, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- China will maintain the stability of its Renminbi (RMB) exchange rate all along, which does good for the world economic recovery, Commerce Minister Chen Deming said on Monday.     China's exchange rate reform has continued smoothly, and the value of RMB has risen by some 20 percent against the U.S. dollar since 2005, Chen told reporters in Geneva, where he is attending a ministerial conference of the World Trade Organization.     Despite the impact of the global financial crisis and all kinds of other difficulties, the Chinese government has actively tried to boost domestic consumption and stimulate imports, Chen said. PARIS, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- The preparation for the 2010 Shanghai Expo has proceeded into exhibits arrangements and service operation as site constructions are mostly completed, China's representatives of Executive Committee of the Shanghai Expo announced here Tuesday in its last report of progress in the 146thGeneral Assembly of the Bureau of International Exhibition (BIE).     With less than six months ahead of the 2010 Shanghai Expo, all preparation on construction and operation are underway smoothly as scheduled, said Yang Xiong, the deputy director of the executive committee for Shanghai Expo and vice mayor of Shanghai.     Transportation infrastructures inside and outside the Expo site will basically finished by the year end and put into use by the end of next March. Supporting public utilities such as medical treatment, drinking water and communication are also steadily in progress, the report said.     Five permanent structures, namely China Pavilion, Performance Center, Expo Center Theme Pavilion and Expo Boulevard will be completed by the year ends. Twenty-six out of the 42 self-built pavilions of foreign participants have completed their structure and 37 out of 42 rented pavilions were accomplished. All the 11 joint pavilions have been completed by now.     By Dec. 1, over 3,400 rooms in apartments in the Expo Village and service apartments in the surrounding areas will be put into service, and the number will reach 6,700 at the end of the year and 7,100 by the end of next March, the report said.     "As major parts of the construction work has finished, we have shifted our focus to operation, such as service, exhibits arrangement and further design and organization of events and forums," Yang told Xinhua.     During the grand cultural events, about 20,000 sessions of various performances will be staged. To date, 200 countries and international organizations have submitted application for National Day and Honor Day events, totaling 633 performances.     The Expo is not only a carnival for China, but also a showcase for worldwide extraordinary culture and innovations. "The success of World Expo 2010 is bound to help rebuild the global confidence in economic development, and further promote international exchange and cooperation," said Wang Jinzhen, chief delegate of China to the BIE.     To provide better service for foreign participants, four management departments has formed with professionals and experts to be deployed in different zones to improve on-spot service.     Additionally, during the Expo, about 200,000 volunteers selected from current 500,000 applications will offer services in the sites, on city streets, at airports and docks for visitors from across the world.     Chinese delegation issued invitation to friends all over the world at the assembly.     "I think their preparations (for the Shanghai Expo) are progressing very very well," Secretary General of the BIE Vicente Loscertales told Xinhua. BEIJING, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Wang Qishan on Monday hoped China and Germany would increase mutually-beneficial cooperation in various fields to promote bilateral relations.     "China and Germany are highly complementary in economy and share great potential for cooperation," Wang told visiting German Federal Minister of Economics and Technology Rainer Bruederle.     Hailing the China-Germany 37-year diplomatic relations, Wang said the two nations had witnessed frequent high-level exchanges and increased cooperation in economy, trade, investment, science, technology, culture and other fields.     China was in a period which witnessed accelerated industrialization and urbanization, Wang said. "We will unswervingly follow the principle of putting people first and the scientific concept on development to seek sustainable development."     Bruederle said Germany would work with China to expand bilateral cooperation, in a bid to promote healthy and stable development of trade and economic relations between the two nations.

BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- China should take more forward looking and preemptive measures to fight inflation expectations following this year's credit boom and runaway property prices, said a report released by a leading Chinese bank.     Bank loans should be extended at a more reasonable pace with improved structures next year and policy fine-tuning is necessary, the Bank of Communications has said in a report released by its financial research center.     The government should maintain the continuity and stability of its monetary policy and meanwhile be more targeted and flexible, it said.     The report noted an over brisk equity and property market are always prelude of inflation. Money flow should be regulated to prevent asset bubbles.     It also suggested government increase supply of land resources and affordable housing and crack down on land enclosure to curb skyrocketing property prices which gained the most in 14 months in November.     CPI, the main gauge of inflation, jumped 0.6 percent in November from a year ago, the first monthly growth since January, because of lower statistical bases and rising food prices.     The producer price index (PPI), a major measure of inflation at the wholesale level, declined 2.1 percent in November from a year earlier.     The report expected PPI to end monthly drop in December, and the annual CPI decline to narrow to 0.8 percent.     Hyperinflation is unlikely and CPI is predicted to rise four percent next year, it said.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Tuesday he and visiting U.S. President Barack Obama agreed during their talks to resolve the nuclear issues of the Korean Peninsula and Iran through dialogue.     "Both of us remain committed to resolving the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula through dialogue and consultation," Hu said when meeting the press with Obama after their bilateral talks. "Such a commitment serves the common interests of China and the United States and all other parties concerned."     Hu said China and the United States will work with other parties concerned to stick to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the six-party talks process to safeguard the peace and stability of northeast Asia.     The two presidents stressed that it is very important for the stability in the Middle East and the Gulf Region to uphold the international nuclear non-proliferation regime and properly resolve the Iran nuclear issue through dialogue and negotiation, Hu said.
