BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Six Chinese nurses were awarded the Florence Nightingale medal on Tuesday for their prominent contributions to health care.     Chinese President Hu Jintao, who is also the honorary president of the Red Cross Society of China, conferred the medals on the nurses at the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing.     Premier Wen Jiabao and senior leaders including Li Changchun, Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang also attended the awarding ceremony.     Chinese nurses have made great contribution to the country's humanitarian cause, said Vice Premier Hui Liangyu at the awarding ceremony.     A total of 28 nurses from 15 countries worldwide won the award this year.     The Florence Nightingale medal, which is the highest international honor for nurses, is being given for the 42nd time since its introduction in 1912.     "It honors exceptional courage and devotion to caring for the victims of armed conflict or other disasters, or exemplary service and a creative and pioneering spirit in the areas of public health or nursing education," according to the Web site of the International Committee of the Red Cross.     The award is named after Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), an English nurse known for her pioneering work to improve the care of sick and wounded soldiers during the Crimean War (1853-1856).     A total of 54 Chinese nurses have won the award since the country began to recommend candidates for the award in 1983.

BEIJING, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Justices in China's Supreme People's Court, as well as judges in local courts, will start working side by side with anti-corruption supervisors from Monday.     On Friday, 14 full time supervisors were installed in the Supreme People's Court (SPC) to oversee judges, court-order enforcers and other court staff.     The SPC said in a statement Sunday that 24,521 anti-corruption supervisors had been in place in 2,392 courts across the country.     In local courts, the posts of anti-corruption supervisors were concurrently held by senior judges, it said.     The system was born out of the efforts "to better combat corruption and redress injustices in a timely manner," said Shen Deyong, SPC executive vice-president.     The Supreme People's court had issued a tentative measure to facilitate coordination between the internal check system and external supervision departments, said the statement.     It also said courts across China would work to optimize the system with measures such as appointing more supervisors and setting up regular exchange and appraisal systems for anti-corruption supervisors.

BEIJING, Dec. 26 -- European fashion retailers are accelerating business expansion in China thanks to the nation's increasing number of fashion-conscious consumers.     Two companies that opened new outlets in China at a rapid pace this year included Sweden's H&M and Spain's Zara, both retailers of clothing and accessories for adults and youth.     H&M is ending this year with a total of 13 new stores, raising the company portfolio in China to 27 outlets, while Zara, opened 33 new stores in China, winding down the year with 60 in total.     "In China, new store openings have more than doubled due to strong domestic consumption, which has not been affected by the global financial downturn," said Wu Shuang, public relations manager of H&M China. Chinese consumers can expect to see more Zara 'fast fashion' stores in the future," he said.     Fast fashion is a term used to describe fashion trends that are manufactured quickly in smaller batches to keep inventories down and allow mainstream consumers to take advantage of current clothing styles at lower prices. This type of quick manufacturing methodology is preferred by large retailers like H&M, Forever 21 and Zara, according to online apparel industry directory, Apparel Search.     This access to the latest clothing styles is popular with white-collar consumers in China.     "I have been waiting for 30 minutes to try on several pieces of clothing, but the wait doesn't matter. I love to get everything here, and the prices are acceptable," said Liu Dan, a woman in her 20s shopping at one of Zara's Beijing stores. Liu, who works in the public relations department at an international company, said she is also a regular patron of H&M in Beijing. Both H&M and Zara stores are often crowded with local consumers, especially on the weekends.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States issued a joint statement in Beijing Tuesday, promising that the two countries would "take concrete steps" to advance "sustained and reliable" military-to-military relations in the future.     "The two sides will actively implement various exchange and cooperation programs agreed between the two militaries, including by increasing the level and frequency of exchanges," according to the joint statement issued after Chinese President Hu Jintao met with visiting U.S. President Barack Obama.     The two sides commended the outcomes of the visit to the U.S. by General Xu Caihou, vice chairman of the Chinese Central Military Commission, in October this year.     Preparations would be made for the visit to the U.S. by General Chen Bingde, chief of the General Staff of China's People's Liberation Army, and the visits to China by Robert Gates, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, and Admiral Michael Mullen, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, the statement showed.     The goal of these efforts, according to the statement, is to improve the Chinese and U.S. militaries' capabilities for practical cooperation and foster greater understanding of each other's intentions and of the international security environment.     Obama is in Beijing for a four-day state visit to China that started in Shanghai Sunday night.
