BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu, who headed Monday to the typhoon-hit regions in Fujian and Zhejiang, warned Tuesday that the country faces grim tasks of fighting secondary disasters as a result of Typhoon Morakot. Big floods are still likely to happen as heavy rainfall persists in the south and many rivers continued to maintain high water levels, he said.     More than 20 rivers reported water levels above flood-alarm lines in Zhejiang, Fujian and Anhui provinces. BEIJING, July 31 (Xinhua) -- In an unexceptional courtyard on the street behind Jingshan Hill in central Beijing, two Chinese pines stand side by side.     This was the residence of Zhuo Lin, widow of China's late leader Deng Xiaoping. On Wednesday, she passed away, aged 93. Deng was also 93 when he died 12 years ago.     To complete the last trip with her beloved husband, Zhuo chose to have her ashes scattered at sea as her husband's were. SINGAPORE, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- The 6th China-Singapore Joint Council Meeting for Bilateral Cooperation, co-chaired by visiting Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan and Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng, was held here on Monday.     During the meeting, Wang Qishan spoke highly of the China-Singapore relations. BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC)and the government are to deepen the educational campaign on national unity, Liu Yunshan, head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, said Monday.     At a televised conference held by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Education, and the State Ethnic Affairs Commission in Beijing, Liu said strengthening education on national unity was necessary "for safeguarding national unification and opposing separatism", as well as "for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation." BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- East China is bracing for typhoon Morakot's approach after it slammed into Taiwan Friday night.     Weather forecasters said late Saturday Morakot was likely to land on the coast from Cangnan, Zhejiang province, to Xiapu, neighboring Fujian province, between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Sunday. Although the typhoon this year is expected to weaken to a tropical storm before it arrives in the Chinese mainland, it was packing winds of 137 kilometers an hour at 7 a.m. Saturday and churning northwestwards at a speed of 15 to 20 kilometers an hour. The urban area of Linbian Township in Pingtung County of southeast China's Taiwan, is flooded Aug. 8, 2009, because of heavy rainfall brought by typhoon "Morakot".     It has already unleashed torrential rain in Fujian where, at five sites, water levels have been recorded at 0.02 to 0.66 meters above warning levels. The earlier tropical storm Goni has also wreaked havoc in South China Sea, leaving as many as 156 fishermen and crew members from Cambodia, Vietnam and China missing at once.     Chinese maritime authorities had rescued 146 by 6 p.m. and the remaining 10 from China were still missing.     PREPARATION IN FUJIAN     More than 480,000 people in Fujian have been evacuated and its Zherong County received more than 300 mm of precipitation on Saturday afternoon.     In Luoyuan county of Fuzhou city, Fujian's capital, people stayed at home during the weekend and roads were almost empty. Fewer sellers appeared in the county's vegetable market. Fishing boats moor at a port to avoid the approaching Typhoon Morakot in Jinjiang, southeast China's Fujian Province, Aug. 8, 2009."The fields were flooded," said Li Sailian, a vegetable seller.     "Strong winds broke the ropes tying down the horsebeans, and the crown daisies (chrysanthemum greens) were destroyed," she said.     Li brought all her available stock to the market, fearing the storm would destroy it completely.     In downtown Fuzhou, where several big trees have already been toppled by gale-force winds, people were rushing to supermarkets for necessities before the typhoon arrived.     All flights from Saturday noon onwards at the airport in Fuzhou were cancelled, leaving more than 120 passengers stranded. Airport staff were helping with refunds.     Seventeen of the 312 flights to and from the airport in coastal Xiamen city were cancelled, most of which were heading to Anhui, Guangdong and Taiwan.     In Putian City, also in Fujian, all scenic sites and ports have been closed and school classes suspended. A team of 26,222 people has been formed and equipped with flood-control materials, said Huang Dongzhou, director of the city's flood control office.     All of the city's 7,168 fishing ships have returned to harbor, Huang said.     The province's Ningde city is strengthening its defences to bear the brunt of Morakot, local meteorological authorities said.     People there are also reinforcing reservoirs with bricks and stones. Water in the city's 20 major reservoirs is only at 54 percent of their combined capacity, so officials with the flood control office said they think the rainfall will help with drought relief, as long as proper measures are taken to ensure safety.     Residents are also busy reinforcing their own houses.     Chen Kongsheng, a 61-year-old man, has attached four large rocks to the girders of his house, so that the typhoon "won't tear off his roof".     About 118,000 people in the city have been evacuated, said Chen Rongkai, Communist Party chief of the city.     Ningde has readied 103 rescue boats, 15 rafts and 8,300 life jackets to help people affected by the typhoon.     EFFORTS AND TROUBLES ELSEWHERE     In adjacent Zhejiang Province, rainfall exceeded 50 millimetres on 6.8 percent of the province's land on Friday night. The highest reading was 110 millimetres in Cangnan county bordering Fujian.     An expressway from Wenzhou of Zhejiang to Fujian was closed for 12 kilometers, while another from Hangzhou to Anhui Province was cut by landslides. It landed in Hualien of Taiwan at 11:45 p.m. Friday, and left at least six people dead or missing. A further 12 were injured. Morakot also overturned cars and cut power supplies.     WAVE ALERT LEVEL RAISED     On Saturday afternoon, the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center upgraded its alert level for both stormy tide and sea wave from "orange" to "red", the highest level.     The center said as a result of Typhoon Morakot, the stormy tide along the coast of Zhejiang Province and northern part of Fujian Province would be 0.5 meters to 1.8 meters high until Sunday afternoon.     The sea in southern part of the East China Sea and Taiwan Strait will be very rough, with monster waves as high as eight meters, the center warned.     Other coastal areas from Shanghai to Guangdong Province will all experience abnormally high waves, from 2.5 meters to six meters high, it said.     China adopts a four-grade warning system for stormy tide, tsunami, sea ice and sea wave, which uses four colors (red, orange, yellow and blue) to indicate different levels of emergency.

BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Clean streets replete with national flags, major road intersections adorned with ornate potted plants, Beijing is in gala attire early Thursday for the massive celebration commemorating the 60th founding anniversary of the People's Republic of China.     The event will showcase how the country explores the road of building socialism with Chinese characteristic in the past decades, and what great achievements it has attained.     A shower made the city clean Wednesday night and early Thursday morning after rain-inducing chemicals were fired into the sky above Beijing that was filled by smoke and vapor in the past two days.     Weather cleared up as of 9:00 a.m. and sunshine seems plenty for the well-prepared air force echelons to take off.     Hundreds of thousands of people are gathering on Tian'anmen Square and along Chang'an Avenue in central Beijing to experience the grandiose celebration that will boost their national pride.     Many people had an early rise Thursday morning to get prepared to watch the much-anticipated military and civilian parade either alongside the parade route or on TV. They are planked with 56 columns, 13meters tall and painted in red and yellow, representing the country's 56 nationalities.     William Poirier, vice president of the Nuclear Power Plants China of Westinghouse Electric Company, said he was very impressed by the 56 columns of ethnic unity and the massive digital screens on Tian'anmen Square.     The columns represent a wonderful part of the Chinese culture while the screens China's good technology, he said, adding the upcoming parade would be a grand display of many aspects of China.     Tens of thousands of colorfully-clad youngsters have gathered on the square to prepare for their performance slated for Thursday morning.     J. C. M. Busbhman, a flower bulb expert from the Netherlands, told reporters at the scene that he was "so impressed by the amount of children" on Tian'anmen Square.     He said he had never watched a military parade of such a scale and had great expectations for the upcoming one.     Soldiers, armored vehicles and state-of-the-art weaponry carried on motor vehicles left suburban military camps early in the morning and are lining up at the east Chang'an boulevard, the designated rendezvous.     Soldiers are singing barrack ballads while civilians gather around colorful floats opposite the soldiers are cheering to the rhythm.     The youngest formation of all is composed of freshmen from the elite Tsinghua University. Most of the participants of the formation were born after the year 1990 and did not attend the previous rehearsals.     Guo Xiaoyang, a teacher from the university, said they will bring about the best of modern Chinese young people during the upcoming parade.     Flags on Tian'anmen Rostrum flutter in the autumn breeze. Later in the morning, Chinese top leaders, like their predecessors, will be standing on the rostrum and watch the grand show of armed forces and masses.     Municipal authorities have exercised traffic control measures along the Chang'an Avenue. Entrances to affected subway stations are locked and taxis are not allowed to operate in the areas cordoned off.     Opposite Wangfujing Street, a prime shopping center in downtown Beijing, a miniature of the Bird's Nest, where the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games opening and closing ceremonies were held, was constructed. Right across the street, there stood the Haibao, mascot of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai.     Potted plants and flowers line up the streets while colorful posters are pasted on walls, and celebration slogans can be seen on billboards. There are also ornamental plants and plant structures in the shape of dragon, Great Wall, and all symbols of the country's pride.     The grand military parade scheduled to be held at 10 a.m. Thursday will be the 14th parade since 1949, the year when the People's Republic of China was founded.     The most recent massive parade was in 1999 when New China marked its 50th birthday.     Military parades normally feature a display of formations of the armed forces, as well as new weapons, artillery, tanks, armored vehicles, and aircraft.

BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- State-run companies in China should stick to the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Vice President Xi Jinping said Monday.     Xi made the remarks at a meeting held here to promote Party building in China's state-run enterprises.     Party building lay at the core of the competitiveness of state-run enterprises, Xi said, adding that "the CPC's leadership over the enterprises should be upheld unswervingly... in order to help enterprises retain scientific development".     Li Yuanchao, head of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, said at the meeting that bosses of the state-run companies headquartered in Beijing should increase the Party organs' involvement in the companies' decision-making process.     Party organs should participate in the process of the state-run companies' major decisions made by the companies' board meeting to ensure that they could play supervising functions, Li said.     Meanwhile, He Yong, deputy secretary of CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), urged the bosses of the country's state-run companies to be cleanhanded.     Restrictions and supervision over power should be intensified for the main leaders of the companies, He said, adding that the anti-corruption effort inside the state-run companies was an important part of the mechanism's construction.     The state-run companies' bosses should also enhance their discipline education and loyalty to the Party, the official said.     The anti-corruption effort in the state-run companies came after former chairman of Sinopec Chen Tonghai was sentenced to death last month with a two-year reprieve for taking huge bribes.     Chen took about 195.73 million yuan (28.66 million U.S. dollars) in bribes from 1999 to June 2007 by taking advantage of his positions in Sinopec, one of the country's major oil refiners.     Also present at Monday's meeting was Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang, who stressed that the top priority of state-run enterprises at the moment was to maintain steady and relatively fast development.

URUMQI, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- The party chief of Urumqi and police chief of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region were removed from their posts Saturday. The removal came after the July 5 riot in Urumqi which left 197people dead and following syringe attacks in the city that caused panic among the public. Li Zhi, 59, secretary of the Urumqi Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), was replaced by Zhu Hailun, 51, secretary of the CPC Xinjiang Autonomous Regional Political and Legislative Affairs Committee, according to a decision by the CPC Xinjiang Autonomous Regional Committee and approved by the CPC Central Committee.     Li was appointed the Urumqi party chief in November, 2006.     Also on Saturday, Xinjiang's police chief Liu Yaohua was replaced by Zhu Changjie, party chief of Xinjiang's Aksu Prefecture. Zhang Hong said on Friday the situation was basically under control in the city.     SYRINGE ATTACKS     Fresh protests broke out this week after hundreds of Urumqi residents reported that they were stabbed by syringes. Five people were dead and at least 14 people hospitalized over injuries in the protests.     Tens of thousands of people took to the streets to protest against the syringe attacks and demand security guarantees.     By Thursday, local hospitals had dealt with 531 victims of hypodermic syringe stabbings, 106 of whom showed obvious signs of needle attacks.     Chinese military medical experts on Saturday ruled out the possibility that radioactive substance, anthrax and toxic chemical were used in recent syringe attacks in Urumqi City.     "According to the preliminary test results, such possibilities can be ruled out," said Qian Jun, director of Disease Control and Biological Security Office with China's Academy of Military Medical Sciences.     Qian said he, along with other five medical experts from the military, had examined medical records of more than 200 victims since Friday.     Samples had been sent to Beijing for further test, Qian added.     Xinjiang police has captured 25 suspects amid the syringe scare, of whom seven are in police custody, four were arrested and four others were referred for criminal prosecution.     Four suspects, three men and one woman, have been prosecuted for endangering public security, said Wutkur Abdurahman, procurator general of the city's procuratorate Saturday.     The four, all from the Uygur ethnic group, were involved in three cases.     Two suspects threatened a taxi driver with a syringe and robbed him, one suspect allegedly inserted a pin into a woman's buttock at a roadside fruit stall, and the other injured police when resisting arrest with a syringe that contained drug.     SOCIAL ORDER BACK TO NORMAL     Xinhua reporters witnessed Saturday that most of the buses in Urumqi had resumed operation. People could be seen on buses, some of which were even a bit crowded. Many were waiting at bus stops.     A large number of customers could be seen at the Carrefour Supermarket at Nanhunanlu Road. Long queues were seen in front of the cashiers at noon.     In Hepingnanlu Road and Xinhuananlu Road, areas mainly inhabited by people of Uygur ethnic group, shops on both sides of the roads have resumed operation.     Situation in Urumqi came under control Friday, as there were no major protests in the city. Small crowds, which gathered "in a fewlocations," were soon dispersed, said Executive Deputy Mayor ZhangHong.
