CHENGDU, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao extended Lunar New Year greetings on behalf of the government and joined holiday festivities in quake-hit Sichuan Province in southwest China over the weekend.     Wen visited villagers, students, medical workers and police in Beichuan, Deyang and Wenchuan, which were among the worst-hit areas in the 8.0-magnitude quake that struck on May 12.     It was Wen's seventh visit to the province since the quake, which was centered in Wenchuan County. The earthquake left more than 69,000 people dead, 374,000 injured, 18,000 missing and millions homeless.     Wen started with a visit to Wang Chengyi's home on Saturday afternoon. In a community of makeshift houses, Wen went into a kitchen shared by the Wu's and two other families and joined them in preparing dinner for the Spring Festival's Eve. BEIJING, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares dropped 1.97 percent on Friday, the month's last trading day.     The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index lost 1.97 percent, or 34.82 points, to close at 1,728.79. The Shenzhen index was down 1.19 percent, or 70.33 points, to close at 5,839.33 points.     The combined turnover was 35.23 billion yuan (5.03 billion U.S.dollars), compared with 49.35 billion yuan on the previous trading day. Losses outnumbered gains by 656 to 199 in Shanghai and 576 to151 in Shenzhen.     Almost all sectors fell except industries related to aircraft making after the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China Ltd. (CACC) announced Chinese indigenous regional jets would be sold to the United States, analysts said. CACC is not a publicly traded company.     Coal companies suffered the most losses. Kailuan Clean Coal Co.lost 7.21 percent to 10.3 yuan. Taiyuan Coal Gasification Company fell 4.34 percent to 7.50 yuan.     "I don't think the fall was related to recent mine accidents. It was a reflection of diminishing global energy demand," said Alex Xue, analyst with JL McGregor & Company.     The finance sector also dropped by an average of 3 percent. CITIC securities lost 2.46 percent to 17.84 yuan. Bank of Communications fell 4.20 percent to 4.33 yuan.     According to estimates from Friday's China Securities News, third-quarter profits of the country's 1,466 listed companies would fall 10.17 percent from the same period a year ago and 18.41 percent from the previous month to 206.09 billion yuan.     Operating net cash flow fell 51.75 percent to 827.4 billion yuan in the first three quarters. Analysts said rising material costs and weakening demand led to slumping profits.     The country's industrial output value growth slowed to 11.4 percent in September, the lowest rate since April 2002, the National Development and Reform Commission said on Thursday.     Despite the latest rate cut, which was viewed as helpful to stabilizing the stock market, analysts said the market could possibly continue falling. The long-term affects from the rate cut are yet to been seen.

BANGKOK, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- The first Chinese charter plane organized by Chinese government landed Saturday afternoon at U-Tapao airport, some 180 kilometers from Bangkok to bring back home Chinese tourists stranded in Bangkok due to anti-government protestors' siege of the two Bangkok airports.     The first flight from China Eastern Airlines, a A300 airplane, arrived at about 4:30 p.m. local time (0930GMT) at the small and crowded military airport to board 261 passengers back to Shanghai. It will be followed by four other charter planes, from the China International Airlines, China Southern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines.     The five planes will take the first batch of some 1,400 stranded Chinese back to Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai, hopefully to take off on late Saturday. ABOARD DESTROYER WUHAN, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese mainland navel fleet on Monday began to carry out an escort mission for four merchant ships including one from Taiwan in the Gulf of Aden off Somalia.     The mission is also escorting two other ships from Shanghai and one from the Philippines to protect them against pirate attacks. BOSE, Guangxi, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's top lawmaker urged the southwest Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to build more transportation infrastructure and accept more industries from developed areas.     Guangxi should try to find a road for development compatible to its own realities, said Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), during his tour of the region which wraps up Wednesday.     Wu said the region should use the advantages it has such as low labor costs and natural resources to develop rural areas.     Wu, who is also member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, visited local villages, factories and schools to talk about rural reforms made at the recent Third Plenary Session of the Seventeenth CPC Central Committee.     He said the region should use its advantage of having a lengthy coastline and many sea ports, to make the Beibu Gulf Economic Zone the top recipient of development.     During his tour, Wu paid a visit to the Bose Memorial Hall, in Bose City. BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature on Thursday started to review a draft law on food safety, which sets stricter food quality standards and demands greater government responsibility.     The draft, which was revised after the recent contaminated dairy products scandal, would ban all chemicals and materials other than authorized additives in food production.     Health authorities are responsible for assessing and approving food additives and setting their usage. "Only those proved to be safe and necessary in food production are allowed to be listed as food additives," the draft says.     Food producers must strictly stick to the food additives and their usage approved by authorities, according to the draft     In the tainted dairy products scandal, melamine, often used in the manufacturing of plastics, was added to sub-standard or diluted milk to make protein levels appear higher. At least three infants died and more than 50,000 were sickened after drinking the contaminated milk.     The draft also prohibits food safety supervision authorities from issuing inspection exemptions to food producers.     China began exempting companies producing globally-competitive products from quality inspections in 2000 to help them avoid repeated examinations and reduce their burden.     The practice encountered severe criticism when it was discovered that many of the companies producing and selling melamine-tainted dairy products had national inspection exemption qualifications.     The draft was tabled to lawmakers at a bimonthly session of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC).

LIMA, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao met his Peruvian counterpart Alan Garcia Wednesday in Lima for talks on how to deepen comprehensive cooperative partnership between China and the Latin American nation.     The meeting took place soon after the Chinese leader's arrival in the Peruvian capital from Havana.     In a written statement issued upon his arrival here, the Chinese president said he will exchange views with Garcia and other Peruvian leaders on ways to deepen bilateral ties.     Following their talks, the two leaders will attend a signing ceremony of documents on cooperation in trade, customs, quality control and poverty reduction.     Peru is one of China's major trading partners in Latin America,with two-way trade totaling 6 billion U.S. dollars in 2007, a 53 percent increase over the previous year.     While in Lima, Hu will attend the Economic Leaders' Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, which will focus on the world financial crisis, support for the Doha round oftrade talks, food and energy security, and regional economic integration.     The Chinese president will also meet with leaders of several APEC member economies on the sidelines of the APEC meeting.
