WASHINGTON, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Visiting top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo met U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday to exchange views on bilateral ties as well as international and regional issues of common concern.     Speaking to reporters before their talks, Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, said he was pleased to visit the United States at the invitation of Speaker Pelosi, noting that the visit was the first by a top Chinese legislator over the past 20 years.     "The purpose of my visit is intended to promote further growth of China-U.S. relations," Wu said, describing the relationship as one of the most important, dynamic and promising bilateral ties in the world.     He expressed the belief that his U.S. trip will inject new impetus to the growth of China-U.S. relations. PHUKET, Thailand, July 23 (Xinhua) -- China's Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi told reporters Thursday on the sidelines of the ASEAN meeting series that about the Korea Peninsula's nuclear issue, the UN Security Council's resolutions should be implemented and all sides should work hard to avoid escalation of tension.     "China's stand is very firm. We are working very hard for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and we are totally against nuclear proliferation...This issue, the nuclear issue, should be solved by peaceful means through diplomatic negotiation," Yang said.     Yang made the remark before he entered the venue for the 16th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), a top security forum in Asia which is held in the Thai southern island of Phuket on Thursday. KAMPALA, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Special Envoy on African Affairs Liu Guijin on Wednesday called for concerted efforts to be made especially by western countries toward an early ending of Darfur crisis in western Sudan through negotiations between warring parties.     "There is no military solution on the ground. The only possible solution to Darfur problem is the political process," Liu told reporters in a press briefing held here at the Chinese Embassy.     "We need a comprehensive approach to address the problem. To have embargoes or sanctions will not solve the problem," he said during a two-day visit here.     Liu said that China has been extensively involved in facilitating the peace process in Darfur by persuading the Sudanese government to show more flexibility, which has led to Sudan's acceptance of a hybrid peacekeeping mission in the region led by the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN).     He further urged his western colleagues, who seem to have more access to and influence on rebels, to spare no effort to bring them to the negotiation table.     "We appeal to our western partners to exert more influence to convince the rebels to agree and come to the negotiating table with the government of Sudan," he said.     The smooth implementation of the Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) and the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) reached between northern and southern Sudan is the only means to achieve total and sustainable peace in the country, he noted.     The envoy said he fully supports the position taken by the AU and the Arab League on the arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar al Bashir issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in March this year.     The warrant details charges of crimes against humanity and war crimes committed during the conflict in Darfur.     The AU has decided not to cooperate with ICC before an independent investigation is done by former South African President Thabo Mbeki.     "We criticize such move and refuse to cooperate with it. The position of the Chinese government is in compliance with the AU and the Arab League position," Liu said, noting President Bashir has a significant role to play in the implementation of CPA and DPA.     "President Bahir has played a very key role in DPA and CPA. How can you implement them without the involvement of the Sudanese government? If you want peace to be realized in Sudan, the government is a must in this process," he said.     On the concern that the deteriorating relationship between Sudan and neighboring Chad could further impede the peace process in Darfur, Liu said China has been mediating between the two countries to normalize their bilateral relations.     In his recent visits to the two countries, he had tried to persuade the two sides that normalizing the bilateral relationship is for their mutual and shared interests, Liu said.

BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Wednesday urged the country's senior officials to take the 60th anniversary of the founding of the New China as a new start for carrying on its modernization drive while maintain social stability.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks when presiding over the 16th group study for the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, which was themed on understanding and practicing the socialist modernization since the founding of New China.     "Many important revelations come up if we look back on how the Party has led people on the path of socialist modernization," said Hu, stressing the importance of upholding economic development as the central task and promoting comprehensive and sustainable development.     Hu stressed the study of the principle of "freeing our mind, seeking truth from facts, be united and look ahead", which was put forward by late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping.     Hu said that policies regarding reform should be scientific and the methods of practicing these policies should be well-coordinated. MONROVIA, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Zhou Yuxiao has said his country is a responsible and faithful member of the United Nations and it respects the resolutions adopted by the world body.     In a weekend interview with Xinhua, Ambassador Zhou expressed his confidence that the Chinese peacekeepers serving within the United Nations Mission in Liberia would remain in the country up to 2011 when the Liberians would go to polls to elect a new president.     The ambassador said the Chinese peacekeepers here in Liberia are working under the leadership and guidance of the UN mission.     "As far as I know, the United Nations has decided that UNMIL (the United Nations Mission in Liberia) will stay in Liberia until 2011, and supporting Liberian general election is part of UNMIL mandate."     Ambassador Zhou said there could be a small reduction in the size of the Chinese peacekeeping forces in the country, but the troops would remain in Liberia to provide the needed support up to2011 under the UN Mission.     "As part of the UN Peacekeeping force, the Chinese peacekeepers will certainly play its role in supporting the next elections," he said.     The current Chinese peacekeepers are drawn up in three contingents namely medical, transportation and engineering. He said during the Liberian forthcoming elections, obviously the electoral authority will need transportation support which the Chinese unit can assist with.     Ambassador Zhou said although China does not have a combat troop in the mission, but he is confident that the three contingents can play a positive role in the peacekeeping efforts as well as in supporting the forthcoming elections.     "China has always supported the UN endeavors in maintaining peace and stability in Liberia and my view is that the peacekeeping operation in Liberia has so far been successful and we should allow it to stay so," he added.

URUMQI, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region would accelerate local legislation against separatism, said the region's top lawmaker on Sunday.     Eligen Imibakhi, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Xinjiang Regional People's Congress, said the regional congress would unswervingly safeguard the dignity and authority of the Constitution and other laws .     The July 5 incident involving beating, smashing, looting and burning, was a severe violent crime colluded, planned and organized by "three forces" of extremism, separatism and terrorism both at home and abroad, said the regional top legislator.     A most urgent problem to be solved was the lack of law booklets in ethnic minority languages, he said. The region had organized experts to do the translation work and the booklets would soon be distributed to farmers and herdsmen across the region, he added.
