BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature ended its five-day bimonthly session Saturday, approving tort liability and island protection laws and an amendment to the renewable energy law.     Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), told the closing meeting that the Tort Law was significant in "protecting civil rights and people's interests, preventing and punishing infringement acts, reducing conflicts and promoting social harmony and stability."     The top legislator said the amendment to the renewable energy law would "greatly promote a healthy and rapid development of the renewable energy sector and adjust energy structure to strengthen the building of an environment-friendly and resource-saving society."     The island protection law would play a key role in protecting islands' eco-system, rationally utilizing natural resources and safeguarding the country's marine rights, Wu said.     The session also examined two reports from the State Council on employment and boosting development of small and medium-sized enterprises.     It also voted to ratify a United Nations protocol to combat human trafficking -- the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, supplementing the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime.     The session also approved a pact on criminal judicial assistance between China and Malta.     It voted to appoint Han Changfu, former governor of northeastern Jilin Province, as agricultural minister.     The meeting also decided to open the annual plenary session of the NPC on March 5 next year. STOCKHOLM, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Geely Automobile on Wednesday have been confirmed as preferred bidder in the ongoing discussions concerning the possible sale of Volvo Car Corporation.     Ford said while it would be engaging in more detailed and focused negotiations with Geely, no final decisions have been made, reported the Swedish news agency TT.     Ford believes Geely has the potential to be a responsible future owner of Volvo and to take the business forward while preserving its core values and the independence of the Swedish brand. "We have no specific timeline to conclude the discussions," a statement of Ford was quoted as saying by TT.     It also pointed out that Ford would continue to cooperate with Volvo in several areas after a possible sale, Ford said it does not intend to retain a shareholding in Volvo.     "Ford's objective in our discussions with Geely is to secure an agreement that is in the best interests of all the parties," Lewis Booth, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Ford Motor Company, said in the statement.     "Any prospective sale would have to ensure that Volvo has the resources, including the capital investment, necessary to further strengthen the business and build its global franchise, while enabling Ford to continue to focus on and implement our core ONE Ford strategy," Booth added.     "Volvo's management team welcomes today's announcement as a positive step forward," Volvo CEO Stephen Odell said.     "At Volvo, we are continuing to keep our attention firmly fixed on engineering and building great Volvo cars, to reduce our cost base and to return the business to sustainable profitability at the earliest possible opportunity," he added.

"We do not pursue trade surplus and I hope the United States would lift its policy of restricting high-tech products exports to China and increase their proportion in the U.S. exports to China.     "Meanwhile, our two countries should strengthen mutual investment and cooperation in such fields as energy, environmental protection and high technology for a more balanced bilateral trade," Wen said.     The revival of world trade and investment is beneficial to the global effort to cope with the financial crisis and help accelerate the recovery of the world economy, he said.     "China and the United States should work together to fight against protectionism in trade and investment," Wen said.     Obama, who described U.S.-China relations as of global significance, said U.S.-China cooperation is crucial as far as major global issues such as economic recovery, climate change and regional and global peace are concerned.     He hoped the two countries would abandon distrust and misunderstanding, strengthen exchange and cooperation, so as to push U.S.-China relations forward.     The United States appreciates and supports the Chinese government's efforts in developing the economy and reducing poverty, said Obama, adding that the development of China is beneficial to the world.     The United States and China are important trade partners for each other, which has brought huge benefits to both countries, while trade protectionism does no good to either side, Obama said.     He said the United States appreciates China's efforts to adjustthe economic structure, expand domestic demand, protect intellectual property rights and reform the Renminbi exchange rateregime.     The United States would properly handle bilateral trade frictions so that they would not harm the interests of the two countries, Obama said.     The United States has noted China's concern over the export control to China and is willing to take measures and increase high-tech product exports to China, he added.     Before their formal meeting in the State Guesthouse Wednesday morning, Wen said Obama's fruitful visit, the first state visit to China since he took office in January, would be of far-reaching significance.     He expressed his "sincere hope" that Obama's China visit would lift the comprehensive and cooperative China-US relations to a new level.     "The history of Sino-US relations has made it clear that cooperation benefits both sides while confrontation results in harms, and mutual trust brings progress while suspicion causes setbacks," Wen said.     Cooperation is better than containment, dialogue is better than confrontation, and partnership is better than rival ship, he added.     Wen and Obama also exchanged views on global climate change, the Korean Peninsula situation, the Middle East issue and Doha round of world trade talks.     Obama arrived in Shanghai on Sunday night to kick off his four-day visit to China, where on Monday he met with municipal officials and college students and then flied to Beijing in the afternoon.     On Tuesday in Beijing, Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks with Obama, and they reached a wide range of agreements on furthering strategic mutual trust, maintaining exchanges at all levels and meeting global and regional challenges together.     A joint statement was issued after the talks.     Obama also met with China' top legislator Wu Bangguo during his stay in Beijing.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and visiting U.S. President Barack Obama started official talks in Beijing on Tuesday morning to discuss bilateral ties and global issues of mutual concern.     The official talks were held at the Great Hall of the People after a close-door meeting between the two presidents.     It is their third meeting this year following one in London in April and another in New York in September.     Obama is on his first state visit to China on Nov. 15-18 as guest of Hu. He kicked off the visit on Sunday in Shanghai.

BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Profits of China's state-owned enterprises (SOEs) administered by the central government more than doubled in October from a year ago after months of declines, a senior official said here on Friday.     The 132 central SOEs reaped a profit of 79.5 billion yuan (11.64 billion U.S. dollars) in October, up 151 percent year on year, said Huang Shuhe, deputy director of the State-owed Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) at the 2009 Annual CEO Forum.     In October, revenues surged by 22 percent from a year ago to nearly 1.16 trillion yuan, Huang said.     Their profits during Jan-Oct was 633.8 billion yuan, while revenues amounted to 9.83 trillion yuan during the same period.     Huang also noted 24 central SOEs had entered the rank of Fortune 500 companies.     "China's companies still face difficulties and great challenges due to roaring raw material prices, huge environmental pressure and rampant protectionism triggered by the financial crisis," he said.     He said the companies should further enhance independent innovation, improve corporate governance and accelerate the pace of "go global" to compete with foreign brands.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua)-- According to the China-US Joint Statement issued here Tuesday, China and the United States recognize common interests in promoting the peaceful use of outer space and agree to enhance security in outer space.     The statement said the two sides believed that China-US cooperation on common global challenges would contribute to a more prosperous and secure world.     "China and the U.S. agree to discuss issues of strategic importance through such channels as the China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogues and the military-to-military exchanges," said the statement.     It said both leaders reaffirmed their commitment made on June 27, 1998 not to target at each other the strategic nuclear weapons under their respective control.     The two sides agreed to handle, through existing channels of consultations and dialogues, military security and maritime issues in keeping with norms of international law and on the basis of respecting each other's jurisdiction and interests, said the statement.     The statement was signed during President Obama' s first official visit to China between November 15 and 18.
