UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations and China will co-organize a high-level meeting on climate change early next month, with a special focus on technology development and transfer, the world body announced Friday.     UN Undersecretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Sha Zukang and China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Liu Zhenmin briefed member states at the UN Headquarters on the Nov. 7-8 Beijing High-Level Conference on Climate Change: Technology Development and Technology.     "Technology transfer is of enormous importance in tackling climate change," Sha said. "Together with financing technology transfer, it is one of the means of achieving adaptation and mitigation action."     Effective international action on climate change will require progress on the question of technology transfer, which is addressed in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)and also forms a core aspect of the Bali Action Plan, Sha noted.     "In this context, the conference will provide a forum for open, practical and pragmatic discussions on technology transfer and climate change," Sha said. "The conference will focus on practical options and solutions for overcoming barriers to technology development and transfer."     "We hope it will be an opportunity for member states and other stakeholders engage openly, away from the constraints of the negotiating setting," he said.     Sha said that the aim of the conference is to support the UNFCCC process, particularly the forthcoming UN Climate Change Conference in Poznan, Poland in December 2008.     Calling for "broad, high-level participation from member states," Sha said that the conference will be opened by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and that UNFCCC Executive Secretary Yvo de Boer and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair have confirmed their participation.     In his remarks, Liu said that over the years, the international efforts to develop and transfer clean technologies are lagged behind the needs, and the relevant mechanism and financial support are not yet put in place.     With many countries having divergent views on the issue, communication and dialogue will help countries deepen mutual understanding, find common ground and work together to promote technological development and transfer, Liu said.     "The purpose of the high-level conference is to provide a platform of dialogue for international cooperation in the relevant technological development and transfer," Liu said.     "We hope this conference will help countries form some consensus on development and transfer of technologies for addressing climate change so as to further promote the efforts to address climate change," Liu noted. 

TOKYO, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Foreign ministers of China, Japan and South Korea agreed here Saturday to strengthen trilateral cooperation for better political, economic and cultural relations.     Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura and South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Yu Myung Hwan reached the agreement at the second trilateral meeting of foreign ministers from the three countries. BEIJING, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Heavy rainstorms that swept through most parts of China since Tuesday have left at least 12 dead, seven missing and about 3 million affected.     The casualties were reported after the rainstorms and flooding killed 252 people across China in June.     The new wave of rainstorms have caused suspended shipping service in the Three Gorges section of the Yangtze River, blocked traffic in cities, delayed flights, destroyed homes, and flooded farmland.     Central China's Hubei Province and southwestern Yunnan Province on Saturday each reported that six were killed by the torrential rain.     Twenty-five cities and counties in Hubei, where the country's largest river Yangtze runs through, reported a total of 700 million yuan in damages (102 U.S. dollars).     As of 5 p.m. on Saturday, the province saw another four missing, over 26,600 people evacuated and more than 2.58 million others affected, according to the provincial civil affairs department.     The rains also damaged 105,000 hectares of farmland destroyed and toppled1,063 homes in Hubei. The discharging would continue as more heavy rains were expected on the upper reaches of the river.     The shipping services between two dams were suspended for five hours before they were resumed at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- The spacewalk performed by Chinese taikonauts Zhai Zhigang Saturday afternoon marks a major breakthrough in China's space program, Chinese President Hu Jintao said.     Hu talked with the trio taikonauts at the Beijing Aerospace Control Center for the Shenzhou-7 mission at 6:35 p.m. Saturday, when he inquired the physical conditions of the three taikonauts.     "Your country and your fellow citizens thank you for your devotion to the space program," he said.     He congratulated the trio over the success of the spacewalk, and encouraged them to continue the efforts for a "complete success.     Zhai Zhigang was assisted during the spacewalk by Liu Boming in the orbit module. China is the third country in the world to accomplish the feat after the United States and Russia. "How did you feel like in space?", President Hu asks spacewalker    Chinese President Hu Jintao asked Chinese taikonauts what it was like walking in space in a conversation with them after the trio successfully realized the country's first-ever space walk on Saturday.     "How did you feel like in space after exiting the module?" asked smiling Hu, who was talking on a phone that connected him at the Beijing Aerospace Control Center (BACC) with astronauts on the spacecraft Shenzhou-7.     "I felt superb," answered Zhai Zhigang, who carried out about 25 minutes of extra-vehicular activity (EVA) about 343 km above the earth after floating out of the Shenzhou-7 cabin on Saturday afternoon.     "The process of taking on the Feitian spacesuit went smooth," said Zhai, looking confident and radiant on the screen at the BACC. "In the vast space, I felt proud of our motherland."      Hu congratulated the astronauts on the successful feat and encouraged them to carry on efforts to fulfill the mission.     "The thing I most want to know is how are you feeling now and how is your work going," Hu asked the trio.     "We feel well," said Zhai. MIANYANG, Sichuan Province, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Saturday visited with some earthquake survivors who had resettled in public camps in Sichuan Province's Mianyang City.     For refugees staying in low-lying lands in the southwest Chinese province, they were also at threat from the huge "quake lakes" bursting their banks.     The 8.0-magnitude tremor on May 12, which had claimed at least 69,134 lives to date, had created the threatening 200 million cubic meter Tangjiashan quake lake which overlooks Mianyang, about 70 meters above the city.     The local government is currently relocating more than 210,000 people to safer grounds.     In his third visit to the province since the quake, Wen said ina camp harboring hundreds of the quake homeless, "I hope you would understand our efforts to resettle you away from your home to a relatively safe place because the swelling quake lake is so dangerous."     "Yes, we understand," the locals replied. BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Millions of Chinese have used this year's mid-Autumn Festival, which fell on Sunday, to get together with family and loved ones.     This year the Chinese government made the festival a three-day national holiday for the first time.     Railways and buses from Chengdu, capital in southwest China's Sichuan Province, carried 180,000 people to quake-battered cities in the province on the first day of the holiday on Saturday, according to the transport authority.     "The holiday gave us a break from work to go back home to see my parents in Shifang City, after it was hit by the earthquake in May," said a man surnamed Li, while waiting in a crowded bus terminal in Chengdu.     Radio broadcast at the terminal reported travel was difficult, because of repairs on the road or damage from the earthquake. Home-going passengers, many holding packages of mooncakes, stood waiting.     Li said the passengers shared a common understanding that the festival's tradition of family values made the trip home more meaningful, and people with painful memories of the disasters cherished such chance.     Elsewhere in the country, people preferred to share the holiday feeling at home or on short family trips to tourist spots, instead of going far for travel, according to travel agencies.     Leading Chinese travel services like China Travel Service and CCT Travel reported slack booking for Mid-Autumn travels.     A staffer at the CCT Travel's office in scenic Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southwest China said that travel for the week-long National Day holiday in Oct. was booked up. BEIJING, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has ordered the armed forces and civil aviation department to deploy 90 more helicopters for rescue missions in quake-hit Sichuan province.     The decision was made at a late Wednesday evening meeting of the national quake relief headquarters held on a running train from Sichuan provincial capital Chengdu to Guangyuan city about 200 kilometers away. YINCHUAN, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Delegates from China's central government presented a gift to Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region for the 50th anniversary of its founding.     At a ceremony held in the region's capital Yinchuan on Monday, senior official He Guoqiang delivered a Chinese Ding.
