TIANJIN, March 21 (Xinhua) -- The construction of a new express railway section between two cities near Beijing was kicked off Sunday, which, when completed, is expected to further speed up economic integration around the Chinese capital.The 158-km-long railway linking coastal Tianjin and Baoding in Hebei Province will shorten the journey between the two cities to less than an hour.The project is part of the railway network that covers Beijing, Tianjin and cities in Hebei."The network will serve as an important impetus for the integration of the cities around Beijing," said Wang Ailan, a researcher with the Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences.An express railway between Beijing and Tianjin was put into operation in August 2008, shortening the 120-km journey between the two municipalities to only 30 minutes from the previous 74 minutes at least.The intercity railway network is centered at Beijing and Tianjin, and all the cities covered by the network, including Hebei provincial capital Shijiazhuang and coastal Qinhuangdao, can reach each other within two hours' rail ride, according to the plan .With an investment of 24 billion yuan (about 3.5 billion U.S. dollars) and a designed speed of 250 km per hour, the section between Tianjin and Baoding will serve both passenger and freight trains.The railway between Tianjin and Qinhuangdao, which is under construction, boasts a designed speed of 350 km per hour and will cut the trip between the two cities to 50 minutes when completed. Currently, the fastest train journey between the two port cities is about two hours.A high-speed passenger rail between Beijing and Shijiazhuang is also under construction. By 2012, 11 cities in Hebei will be covered by high-speed rails, and by 2020, the intercity railways between Beijing, Tianjin and cities in Hebei will reach 710 kilometers.

BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police had cracked 210 online gambling crimes and arrested 918 suspects in the 13 days ending Feb. 20, an official with the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) said Wednesday.Gu Jian, vice director of the bureau of cyber security under the ministry, said the ministry also cracked another 122 less severe cases and punished 351 people in the same period.He did not provide further details about the cases.Eight Party departments, government ministries and financial regulatory bodies including the MPS and the People's Bank of China, jointly launched a seven-month-long nationwide campaign to curb online gambling on Feb. 8.The campaign, according to an earlier statement from the MPS, targets "major and severe cases, and would arrest domestic and foreign groups that organize online gambling and severely punish the offenders."Online gambling has seriously disturbed social and economic order, and has drawn strong complaints from the public, Gu said.

The set of standards, the first of its kind in the country, require the school buses to bear unified tag, according to the Beijing News on Friday.The tag features two school children on two separate pages of an unfolded book.According to the standards, school buses should have seat belts for each seat and there should be one seat or more for caretakers.Double-deck bus and articulated bus are not allowed to serve as primary school buses for safety concern.The standards also require the bus makers to install a device to record the driving speed, time and mileage of the vehicle.The standards, jointly issued by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) and the Standardization Administration, will come into force on July 1.

BEIJING, March 18 (Xinhua) -- China's government is set to order some central state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to quit real estate business as their land acquisitions are blamed for fuelling rise of urban housing prices, spokesman of the state assets watchdog Du Yuanquan said Thursday.The State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) would require 78 centrally-administered SOEs, whose major business was not property development, to withdraw from the business, Du said in a SASAC press conference Thursday in Beijing.The SASAC gave no specific timetable for the withdrawal, but Du said it would require the 78 enterprises to step up business restructuring and gradually pull out of property development after all current real estate projects were finished.Housing prices in China's 70 large and medium-sized cities grew 10.7 percent in February from a year earlier, and were up 0.9 percent compared to the previous month, according to official figures.However, a total of 16 central SOEs, who have property development as major business, such as the China National Real Estate Development Group Corp. and the China Poly Group Corp., would continue in real estate, said Du.

Those policies would help the small ethnic groups cultivate an independent 'blood-making' capability to sustain their own development," said Han from Salar, one of China's 22 ethnic groups with small population.Compared with the country's booming coastal regions, regions where ethnic groups with small population live, mostly in central and western inland regions, remain relatively backward.To accelerate the development of the regions where ethnic groups with small population live, China's State Council passed in 2005 a guideline, promising to build roads, schools and basic medical institutions, and provide them with access to electricity, TV and phone service, and drinking water, in addition to sufficient farms and pastures to live on.According to statistics from the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, China had invested more than 2.5 billion yuan (about 368 million U.S. dollars) in 8,065 projects aimed to support small ethnic groups between 2005 and November 2009.But for Qiao Zhengxiao, another deputy to the NPC and Party chief of the Qinghai University, the aid to ethnic minority groups was still not enough."The central government mainly focused on Tibet and other regions of ethnic groups with relatively larger population last year and this year," said Qiao, from the Tu ethnic group."I hope the government will attach more importance to ethnic groups with smaller population in the future," he said.He suggested ethnic minority groups each with population less than 300,000 be covered by the favorable polices passed in 2005.Meanwhile, Han Yongdong also suggested that museums and research projects should be set up to protect the small ethnic groups' culture."My own kid cannot speak the Salar language. XI'AN, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- A high-speed railway linking central China city Zhengzhou and northwestern city Xi'an, went into operation Saturday.The 505-km Zhengzhou-Xi'an high-speed railway, the first of its kind in central and western China, cut the travel time between the two cities from former more than six hours to less than two hours, said local railway authorities Saturday.The first train left Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province, at 10:50 a.m. and arrived at Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province, at 1:15 p.m., said Long Jing, head of the Xi'an Railway Bureau. With a speed of 350 kilometers per hour, the high-speed Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train coded G2004 is about to leave Xi'an for Zhengzhou in Xi'an Railway Station, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, on Feb. 6, 2010.The train traveled at 350 kilometers per hour, said Long.
