BRUSSELS, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- China and the European Union (EU) on Friday agreed to strengthen practical cooperation in jointly addressing the current global financial crisis.     The agreement came after talks between visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, who arrived here on Thursday for a visit to the EU headquarters, and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.     Wen told Barroso that China, in its foreign relations, lays a strategic emphasis on developing the comprehensive strategic partnership with the EU, and promoting cooperation to jointly tide over the current difficulties should be a key task for both sides under current circumstances.     To this end, both sides need to trust and respect each other, treat each other equally and aim for mutual benefit, Wen said. In particular, China and the EU should address each other's major concerns and try to stave off disputes, he added.     Barroso said the EU and China have seen close, deep and fruitful relations, and, as two major forces in the world, many global issues cannot be solved without EU-China cooperation.     The EU is ready to promote dialogue and cooperation with China to elevate the comprehensive strategic partnership to a higher level, he said.     To jointly tackle the global financial crisis, China and the EU agreed to expand information exchanges between financial institutions, the central banks and financial supervisory and regulatory bodies.     Both sides pledged to promote trade and investment. China will continue to steadily expand market access and increase import from the EU, while the EU recognized China's achievement in promoting market economy.     Both sides agreed to support cooperation between small- and medium-sized businesses and to deepen cooperation in technological innovation in such areas as energy conservation, greenhouse gas emission reduction and health care.     China and the EU vowed to work together in mitigating and adapting to climate change, agreeing to boost cooperation in developing new energies, new energy conservation technology and a low-carbon economy.     The two sides also reached consensus on close coordination in macroeconomic policies and opposition to trade protectionism.     China and the EU on Friday signed cooperation agreements on aviation, work safety, clean energy and intellectual property rights protection.

BEIJING, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's economy was on sound track but prospects were complicated by the world economic slowdown, said Zhou Xiaochuan, governor of China's central bank, on Sunday.     In a report Zhou made to the fifth session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), he said the country's economy was developing as expected, but the world economic slowdown added uncertainties to its prospect.     "Our economy is highly reliant on overseas demand. Slacking exports resulted from the global economic slowdown would have a negative impact on the economy," he said.     He suggested the country need to be cautious in adjusting policies because there are both possibilities of cost-driven price rises and possibilities of continuous price falls in the future.     "Currently, inflation pressure mainly comes from rising cost," he said.     He said in the world, more and more economies began to shift their policies from curbing inflation to boosting economic developments amid a world economic recession. The international commodity price is expected to enter a new round of rise.     According to him, the PBOC will adopt flexible and prudent macro-control policies to strive for the stability of the country's financial sectors and promote sound and rapid economic growth.     Zhou said efforts would go to other specific fields, including establishing financial risk monitoring mechanism, enhancing cooperation among domestic and overseas financial organs, and ensuring liquidity in the banking system.     He also urged strengthening foreign exchange management through enhancing cross-border capital flow management and supervision, in a bid to avoid losses and risk caused by speculation activities.     The central bank would keep a close look over the real estate sector and improve financial services in this sector, he added.     Zhou said that the impact of the world financial crisis on China's economy cannot be underestimated. However, the country's economic situation is sound as a whole, and is capable to effectively resist the external impact.     China's financial sectors have grown stronger after years of development. The profit-earning and risk-resistance abilities have been greatly improved, market liquidity is sufficient, and the financial system is sound and safe, he explained.     The fifth session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC) opened its second plenary meeting Sunday morning. BEIJING, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Senior military officials of China and Myanmar agreed on Saturday to strengthen the relations of the two countries and armed forces in an all-around way.     The two countries should enhance military and state-to-state exchanges to promote regional peace, stability and prosperity, said Chen Bingde, chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), while meeting his Myanmar's counterpart Shwe Mann.     Chen said the two sides have maintained cooperation in various fields, and witnessed smooth development in their military ties.     He hailed the firm support to each other in terms of national development and international affairs, especially those touching on the core interests of both nations.     As good neighbors since ancient times, China and Myanmar have helped each other to fight external aggression and to struggle for respective national independence and liberation in modern history, Chen said.     Shwe Mann, also member of the ruling Myanmar State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), agreed to strengthen bilateral ties in an all-around way.     He expressed appreciation for China's long-term support to Myanmar and reaffirmed Myanmar's adherence to the one-China policy.

BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- China's quality watchdog said on Thursday it found toxic chemicals in food products imported from Japan.     Tests conducted by Guangdong Entry-Exit inspection and quarantine institution found Japan-produced soy sauce and mustard sauce were contaminated by toluene and acetic ester, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ) said on its website.     The food products were produced by three Japanese factories. But GAQSIQ didn't reveal the names of the producers.     Maximal toluene content was 0.0053 mg per kg, while acetic ester content was 0.537 mg per kg. This would risk people's health, said experts.     Toluence and acetic ester are chemicals that can be used as dyeware, paint and solvent. It will lead to headache and vomit if people eat the food tainted with them.     The GAQSIQ has ordered Chinese importers to inspect and test products of the same kind and remove them from shelves, in a bid to ensure consumer safety.     No sickness were reported in China, but earlier Japanese media said some Japanese people felt sick after eating food tainted by the two chemicals.

BEIJING, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's police departments should further standardize the procedure of law enforcement and build harmonious relations with the people, China's top police official said on Tuesday.     State Councilor Meng Jianzhu, also Minister of Public Security, said at a tele-conference with local public security heads that the police should "be fully aware of the challenge brought by the global financial crisis and try their best to maintain social stability."     Meng urged the police to further improve the way of law enforcement, using "a harmonious thinking to ease conflicts and a harmonious attitude to treat the people".     "You should let the people know the authority and dignity of the law, and meanwhile make them feel the care and warmth from the public security authorities," he said.     Earlier this month, Meng published an article in the journal of the Communist Party of China, Qiushi, or Seeking Truth, underscoring "the appropriate use of police force".     "In handling mass incidents, we must be clear that the chief tasks of the public security authorities are to maintain order on the scene, ease conflicts, avoid excessive steps and prevent the situation getting out of control," he wrote.     And the local officials must exercise caution in using police forces, weapons and coercive force, Meng said. "Incidents of bloodshed, injury and death should absolutely be avoided."     A violent protest, involving 30,000 people, broke out on June 28 in Weng'an County of southwest China's Guizhou Province. The protesters rampaged through government buildings and torched more than 160 offices and about 40 vehicles. More than 150 police and protesters were injured, most slightly, and no deaths were reported.     Provincial Party Chief Shi Zongyuan later blamed some local officials' "rude and roughshod solutions" to solve disputes over mines, the demolition of homes for public projects, the relocation of residents for reservoir construction and other issues.     "Some officials neglected their duties, but resorted to police force when any dispute happened, which led to strained relations between officials and the people, and police and the public," Shi said.
