BEIJING, Jan. 4 -- China International Capital Corp (CICC) topped the rankings of the underwriters of China's initial public offerings (IPOs) in 2009, making an estimated 1.23 billion yuan from fees, Bloomberg data showed.     The earning of the country's largest investment bank was boosted by underwriting the China State Construction Engineering Corp's 50.1 billion yuan IPO, the world's second-largest in 2009. CICC also took two other heavyweight companies public, China Shipbuilding Co Ltd and China CNR Co Ltd, raising 14.7 billion yuan and 13.9 billion yuan respectively.     CITIC Securities, the top underwriter in 2008, fell to the No 2 spot in the ranking, making 855 million yuan from IPO deals totaling 28.7 billion yuan, according to Bloomberg data. The third slot went to Orient Securities, which earned 258 million yuan from IPO deals worth 11.9 bllion yuan.     IPOs are among the most lucrative advisory businesses for Chinese securities firms as China has witnessed an IPO boom since it reopened the market last June after a 10-month halt blamed on the widespread global credit crunch.     Chinese securities companies saw an exponential growth in their revenues from the IPO business, making a total of 4.76 billion yuan from underwriting fees, doubling the 2.35 billion yuan in 2008. But the earnings still lagged far behind the 7.61 billion yuan made during the pre-crisis period in 2007.     Last year, 43 Chinese securities firms helped 111 companies go public on the mainland's A-share market, raising 202.2 billion yuan. The value of the IPO deals taken by the top 10 underwriters accounted for more than 70 percent of the total IPO values.     Market insiders said the IPOs of heavyweight companies will remain the target for large investment bank and securities companies such as CICC and CITIC Securities next year while small and medium securities companies will make start-up board ChiNext their primary focus.     Stock prices of listed securities companies soared sharply in the past two weeks, mainly stimulated by unconfirmed reports that China's State Council has given the final nod for the introduction of index futures in 2010.     Analysts said Chinese securities companies would likely see a surge in revenues this year after the regulators announce a clear timetable for the launch of the index futures, margin trading and short selling.     "The new products will certainly boost the earnings and valuations of the brokerage stocks," said Cheng Binbin, an analyst with Qilu Securities "It not only means strong profit growth for securities firms in the future but also a gradual transition toward a more risk-diversified business model."     It is forecast that margin trading and short selling will likely contribute 9.41 to 14.3 billion yuan in revenues of securities companies in 2010 while index futures will contribute 5.76 to 6.34 billion yuan.     The net profit of China's brokerage industry may reach 90 billion yuan in 2009, a year-on-year increase of 90 percent, according to an estimate by Guotai Junan Securities.     Meanwhile, foreign banks also grabbed a share of the lucrative pie of China's booming capital market last year with Swiss bank UBS ranked the largest underwriter of Chinese overseas IPOs. The bank contracted 8 million in underwriting fees from Chinese companies that sought IPOs in the Hong Kong market, worth a total of billion last year, Bloomberg data showed.     Mergers and acquisitions (M&As) made by the Chinese companies remained the traditional cash cow for foreign investment banks in 2009. Morgan Stanley was the No 1 financial advisor in M&A deals worth .9 billion on the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong, according to Bloomberg data.     The largest M&A deal in 2009 made by a Chinese company was the .5 billion acquisition of Swiss oil company Addax Petroleum by China's largest oil refiner, Sinopec.

STOCKHOLM, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Geely Automobile on Wednesday have been confirmed as preferred bidder in the ongoing discussions concerning the possible sale of Volvo Car Corporation.     Ford said while it would be engaging in more detailed and focused negotiations with Geely, no final decisions have been made, reported the Swedish news agency TT.     Ford believes Geely has the potential to be a responsible future owner of Volvo and to take the business forward while preserving its core values and the independence of the Swedish brand. "We have no specific timeline to conclude the discussions," a statement of Ford was quoted as saying by TT.     It also pointed out that Ford would continue to cooperate with Volvo in several areas after a possible sale, Ford said it does not intend to retain a shareholding in Volvo.     "Ford's objective in our discussions with Geely is to secure an agreement that is in the best interests of all the parties," Lewis Booth, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Ford Motor Company, said in the statement.     "Any prospective sale would have to ensure that Volvo has the resources, including the capital investment, necessary to further strengthen the business and build its global franchise, while enabling Ford to continue to focus on and implement our core ONE Ford strategy," Booth added.     "Volvo's management team welcomes today's announcement as a positive step forward," Volvo CEO Stephen Odell said.     "At Volvo, we are continuing to keep our attention firmly fixed on engineering and building great Volvo cars, to reduce our cost base and to return the business to sustainable profitability at the earliest possible opportunity," he added. 

SHANGHAI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai Party chief Yu Zhengsheng met visiting U.S. President Barack Obama Monday, the second day of his China trip.     Shanghai played an important role in the history of Sino-U.S. relations. The signing of the Shanghai Communiqué in 1972 marked the normalization of the bilateral ties, said Yu, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and secretary of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee.     Yu said Obama's visit would be conducive to the dialogue, communication and cooperation between the two countries.     Yu expressed the hope to strengthen cooperation with the U.S. on advanced manufacturing industry, modern service industry and green economy. ADDIS ABABA, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- China views Ethiopia as its major economic and trading partner in Africa, says Minister of Commerce Chen Deming on Monday.     The bilateral trade volume reached a historical high of 1.376 billion U.S. dollars during the first 11 months of last year, up 12.4 percent over the same period of the previous year, said Chen, adding that China's imports from Ethiopia during that period rose 202 percent to over 200 million dollars.     During his talks with Sufian Ahmed, Ethiopia's minister of finance and economic development, the Chinese minister said China's investment in Ethiopia had accumulated to 138 million dollars in areas like textile, daily necessities, machinery, glass, building materials and leather.     By the end of November last year, Chinese firms in Ethiopia had accumulated a turnover of engineering contracts with nearly 4 billion dollars, said Chen, who arrived here on Monday for a two-day visit.     Chen put forward a four-point proposal on further development of bilateral trade and economic cooperation: First, further expanding its imports from Ethiopia through the use of tariff-free policies; Second, strengthening cooperation in investment and engineering contracts and continuing to encourage strong Chinese firms to invest in Ethiopia; Third, fully implementing the eight new measures to enhance cooperation with Africa; Fourth, further promoting cooperation in official development assistance to support Ethiopia's infrastructure, and projects aimed to improve people's well-being.     For his part, Sufian expressed his thanks for China's long-term official development aid to Ethiopia.     The Ethiopian minister said trade deficit with China has improved significantly and China has become Ethiopia's biggest trading partner.     Sufian spoke highly of China's eight new measures to enhance cooperation with Africa, saying that Ethiopia would work together with China to fully implement the measures.

BEIJING, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Tuesday called for more efforts to optimize land use in order to save resources and further economic restructuring.     Li made the remarks during an inspection to the Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR). As the most populous country in the world, China has been faced with shortages of land, water, energy and minerals, and the shortages were worsened by rapid economic growth, he said. Both parties were seeking more areas for cooperation, he said.     Shambaugh told Xinhua the joint statement released on Nov. 17 was an extremely positive document -- filled with countless examples of tangible Sino-American cooperation on a large range of bilateral, regional, and global issues.     Mainichi Shimbun, a major daily in Japan, reported that both parties agreed on deepening China-U.S. relations in a new era, which symbolized the bilateral ties had entered a new phase of development.     Obama said at the press conference that the United States welcomed China as a "strong, prosperous and successful member of the community of nations." This gave the impression that both countries had entered a new era of cooperation on global issues, the newspaper said.     Japan's Kyodo News reported that the Chinese and U.S. presidents agreed to cooperate on a plethora of critical issues, including climate change and nuclear non-proliferation.     Differences on issues such as human rights and trade imbalances were not obvious, which demonstrated that both sides had put intensifying bilateral ties as a priority, the news agency said. 　　CONSOLIDATING FOUNDATION FOR FUTURE DEVELOPMENT     During his talks with Obama, President Hu made five proposals on further advancing China-U.S. relations, of which the top priority was that the two countries should continue to increase strategic mutual trust.     Trust and cooperation is the only way to deal with country-to-country relations in the new era, Hu said, proposing that both sides view the world and each other and their relations from a new perspective.     The two leaders also believed that to nurture and deepen bilateral strategic trust was essential to China-U.S. relations in the new era. SHANGHAI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Visiting U.S. President Barack Obama said here Monday the United States does not seek to contain China's rise and he welcomes China to be a "strong and prosperous and successful member of the community of nations."     Obama made the remarks during a dialogue with Chinese youths in China's economic hub Shanghai.     He said the world is fundamentally interconnected and power in the 21st century is no long a zero-sum game.     "The jobs we do, the prosperity we build, the environment we protect and the security we seek are all shared, " he said. "One country's success does not come at the expense of another."     He arrived in Shanghai late on Sunday and met city officials Monday morning before his meeting with young Chinese.     He will head to Beijing Monday afternoon.
