BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) on Saturday said it expects an increase in grain output for the fifth consecutive year.     The country has harvested nearly 80 percent of its autumn crops and expects 2008 to be a bumper year, the ministry stated.     The State Grain Information Center earlier estimated that this year's grain output would reach 511.5 million tons, up 10 million tons from 2007. CHENGDU, May 13 (Xinhua) -- A senior official with the Sichuan Provincial government said Tuesday the death toll in the province has exceeded 12,000, and is still rising.     Li Chengyun, vice governor of Sichuan, said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon that the death toll was based on incomplete figures tallied by 4:00 p.m. Tuesday. He said another 26,206 people were injured, and more than 9,400 people were buried in debris.     Li also provided a breakdown of the death toll, including 161 in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, 7,395 in Mianyang City, 2,648 in Deyang City, 959 in the provincial capital Chengdu and 700 in Guangyuan City. Other casualties were reported in cities including Ya'an, Ziyang and the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. More than 3.46 million houses were wracked, Li said.     Li said he was deeply saddened by the super earthquake. He called on both officials and the masses in Sichuan to speed up efforts to fight the disaster and rescue themselves.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, who arrived in Sichuan Monday afternoon to oversee rescue work, ordered the clearance of rocks and mud slides that were blocking roads to the epicenter by midnight on Tuesday.     "People are trapped in debris; we must use every second," he told an emergency meeting at 7:00 a.m. Tuesday.     On Tuesday afternoon, a brigade of about 20 soldiers have reached Yingxiu Town of the earthquake epicenter Wenchuan, the disaster relief headquarters in the Chengdu Military Area Command said.     The soldiers reported they saw more than 70 percent of the roads in the town were wracked, and nearly all bridges collapsed. A large number of people were believed to be under the debris.     They said 3,000 people were known to have survived, and the town's total population is 12,000. No information on detailed casualties could be available.     Li Shiming, commander of the Chengdu Military Area Command, said the soldiers had distributed food and water to children and injured people in the town, and more supplies would be airdropped to the area.

BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday began a three-day national mourning for the tens of thousands of people killed in a powerful earthquake which struck the country's southwest on May 12.     At 4:58 a.m., the national flag at the Tian'anmen Square in downtown Beijing flew at half-mast after a complete flag-raising ceremony.     About 2,600 people watched the flag-raising ceremony in the square.     "I have been watching TV to know the disaster situation these days," said Yu Huilin, a 58-year-old retired teacher. Yu just arrived in Beijing by bus in the early hours on Monday from eastern Shandong Province.     "It's really heartrending," she said. "But I see the quake-affected people have got help from so many people. I believe they can recover from the disaster soon rebuild their homes." BEIJING, April 19 (Xinhua) -- The All-China Journalists Association (ACJA) on Saturday asked U.S.-based. news network CNN and its commentator Jack Cafferty to apologize for his remarks regarding China.     In an interview with Chinese media including Xinhua News Agency, a senior official with the ACJA strongly condemned Cafferty for his "insulting" words in a TV show on April 9 and asked him and CNN to make a formal apology to all Chinese as soon as possible.     Cafferty said in the TV show that Chinese products were "junk" and China was "basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they've been for the last 50 years" when the Olympic torch relay was going on in San Francisco.     Since the Lhasa violence on March 14, some foreign media including CNN had made a number of biased reports about the incident, the official said.     CNN had violated the principle of objective reporting, and "this is not what responsible media should do," he said.     "And Cafferty also disregarded a journalist's professional ethics to attack a country with insulting words," the official said.     Despite having an effective mechanism to deal with false reporting, CNN issued a statement on its website six days after Cafferty's remarks, which not only pleaded for him, but also spearheaded its attack on the Chinese government, he said.     CNN issued a statement on Tuesday saying, "It was not Mr. Cafferty's nor CNN's intent to cause offence to the Chinese people, and CNN would apologize to anyone who has interpreted the comments in this way."     But, the statement said that Cafferty was offering his "strongly held" opinion of the Chinese government, not China's people.     "We hope CNN and Cafferty to realize that they have harmed the feelings of Chinese and apologize with a rational and responsible attitude," the official said.     With the Olympic Games drawing near, the ACJA welcomed all foreign media to cover the event in an objective and balanced way, he said.

PYONGYANG, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Tuesday made a five-point proposal to strengthen bilateral ties and cooperation with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).     Xi, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the proposal while meeting with Yang Hyong Sop, vice president of the Presidium of DPRK's Supreme People's Assembly.     Firstly, Xi proposed maintaining the trend of mutual exchange of visits by high ranking officials, and strengthening political communication and close relations between the Chinese Communist Party and the Worker's Party of Korea.     China will continue to exchange views on governance and party construction with the DPRK, maintaining communication on important issues, he said. NAIROBI, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Armed Somali pirates hijacked Wednesday a Hong Kong bulk carrier with 25 crew members, 24 of them Chinese, off the Somali coast, the Chinese embassy in Nairob confirmed.     The bulk carrier owned by Sinotrans of Hong Kong was en route from Tunisia to Pipavav, India when it was hijacked off the eastern coast of Somalia, the 14th of such seizure by the pirates in the past two months, said Andrew Mwangura, an coordinator of the East Africa Seafarers Assistance Program (SAP).     Besides the 24 Chinese, a Sri Lankan captain was also on board the vessel that was captured, Mwangura told Xinhua by telephone.     The carrier was the second Hong Kong ship hijacked this week in the region. A Hong Kong-registered carrier was hijacked on Monday near the Somali coast with 22 crew on board.
