NEW YORK, March 9 (Xinhua) -- China Green Agriculture Inc., the first Chinese company listed on the new New York Stock Exchange Amex market, opened for trading on Monday.     Green Agriculture, which produces and distributes humic acid based liquid compound fertilizer, is also the first Chinese company to list on NYSE Euronext markets in 2009.     "Today is an exciting milestone in the company's continued growth," said Tao Li, chief executive officer of China Green Agriculture.     "Since becoming a public company last year, we have devoted a great deal of resources to improving our corporate governance and level of oversight in order to meet the requirements of a more senior exchange," he added.     So far, NYSE Euronext has 66 companies listed from Greater China, including 56 companies from mainland China listed on the NYSE Euronext, 5 from Hong Kong on NYSE Euronext Markets, and 5 Taiwanese companies on NYSE Euronext Markets.     The total global market capitalization of NYSE Euronext-listed companies from the mainland China is 1.1 trillion U.S. dollars, and 1.2 trillion for all companies from Greater China.

BEIJING, March 7 (Xinhua) -- China should keep potential polluters away from the industry-heavy Yangtze river, the country's longest, by raising threshold and readjusting industrial layout, a political advisor said here Saturday.     "We must set quotas on and raise threshold for potential polluting plants along the Yangtze River to wipe out pollution from the roots," said Chen Qinghua, a member of the 11th National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the top political advisory body.     A monthly report on China's surface water quality showed the Yangtze River was slightly polluted in December 2008 and its branches suffered medium-level pollution, according to the Ministry of Environmental Protection.     China's sizzling economy has seen a surge of heavily polluting industries along the lower valley of the Yangtze River.     Nearly 10,000 of the 21,000 chemical companies in China are along the 6,300 km-long Yangtze River, according to Chen. More than 20 chemical industry parks were under construction.     Local governments had built more than 40,000 reservoirs along the river and its branches in a scrabble for water resources, which has further degraded Yangtze's ecological system, he said.     The government was expanding domestic demand and increase investment amid the global financial crisis, he said.     "We should take the opportunity to improve sewage treatment facilities in cities, and move faster to readjust industrial layout and structure along the river," said Chen, also chief of the Jiangxi Provincial Committee of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang (RCCK), one of China's eight non-Communist parties.     China has seen a spate of industrial accidents along major rivers that disrupted water supplies in cities in recent years.     In the latest incident, at least 200,000 residents in Yancheng,a city in eastern Jiangsu Province, were deprived of tap water supply for three days last month after a chemical factory illegally dumped the disinfectant phenol into a local river.     The city mayor promised earlier this month to shut 33 of the city's 317 chemical plants to check contamination.

BEIJING, Feb. 13 -- Chinese banks issued 1.62 trillion yuan (7 billion) in new loans in January, up 101 percent year-on-year, prompting some economists to say the government might not cut interest rates for the time being to boost the economy.     The massive jump in lending is equal to about one-third of the loans issued in the whole of 2008, a year that began on a generally tight credit line, the central bank said yesterday. M2, which includes cash and all types of deposits and indicates overall liquidity in the financial system, grew in January, too, by 18.8 percent year-on-year. It increased 17.8 percent in December.     The massive growth in lending comes at a time when banks are rushing to cherry-pick the juiciest stimulus-package projects, especially major infrastructure ones that need long-term investment, the economists said. Chinese banks issued 1.62 trillion yuan (7 billion) in new loans in January, up 101 percent year-on-year    The government announced a 6-billion package on November 9 to boost domestic demand and shore up investment. Though the central government will shoulder one-third of the cost, banks will play an important role in financing the construction of bridges, railways and highways.     "The banks are fighting for the best projects in the government's stimulus package," said Ha Jiming, chief economist of China International Capital Corp. "It's not surprising to see that an array of the deals were sealed in the past month."     "The massive lending growth minimizes the need to further cut interest rates heftily," said Lian Ping, chief economist with Bank of Communications. "The liquidity problem should ease with such a growth."     The central bank has cut the benchmark lending rate by 2.16 percentage points in the past four months and reduced the deposit reserve requirement ratio in order to ensure there's enough liquidity in the market to boost the economy.     The growth in lending could also prove to be a blessing for cash-strapped domestic enterprises trying to stay afloat amid shrinking overseas demand and waning consumer confidence.     Central bank figures show bill financing, which supplies working capital, accounted for 39 percent of the new loans.     Medium and long-term corporate loans made up 32 percent.     "It (growth) reduces the default risks of domestic firms, which in turn eases worries over bank asset quality at least in the short term," said Sun Mingchun, an economist with Nomura International.     The economists said the dramatic rise in lending could be partly attributed to pent-up demand for loans last year.     The central bank had imposed a curb on lending till November last year to combat inflation and prevent the economy from overheating.     That left "many firms, especially small- and medium-sized ones, facing a severe cash flow problem", Sun said.     Policymakers lifted the curb in November and raised the target for M2 growth to 17 percent for 2009, up from 16 percent that had been in practice since 2006.     The move is expected to ensure there's enough liquidity in the market to spur investment and boost the economy, whose growth dropped to a seven-year low of 6.8 percent in the fourth quarter last year.     "Credit expansion in the first quarter of this year is expected to be very high because banks can maximize investment returns by front-loading new loans," said Jing Ulrich, managing director and chairwoman of China Equities at JP Morgan.     But Ulrich cautioned against a possible rise in credit risk because the increase in liquidity could cause a sharp rise in banks' non-performing loans.

BEIJING, March 3 (Xinhua) -- A Taipei court has rejected here Tuesday former Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian's appeal against his detention and ordered that he be held in custody for a further two months, starting on March 26.     According to the island's law, a defendant whose maximum, basic, potential sentence is below ten years should not be held for more than three months during trial. If necessary, courts can prolong the detention for no more than two months every time. The detaining period can be prolonged for at most three times.     However, Chen Shui-bian was accused of many corruption charges and his most severe basic sentence could be life, which made the court consider prolonging his detention more than three times.     Chen was first detained on Dec. 30, 2008.     According to the resolution made Tuesday by the Taipei court, the charges against Chen were very severe, and he had repeatedly disturbed the judicial procedure to protect himself and delay the litigation.     "Under the current circumstances, it will be very hard to hold more trials if Chen Shui-bian is not detained," the court said in the resolution.     It added that since Chen was likely to destroy or change evidence and collude with witnesses, it wouldn't be effective enough to confine his living compared to detention. "Thus Chen's appeal for repealing the detention was rejected," it said.     Chen and his wife are accused of taking bribes worth 100 million New Taiwan dollars (29 million U.S. dollars) and 6 million U.S. dollars in a corporate land procurement, and the couple are also allegedly involved in deceivingly pocketing over 104 million New Taiwan dollars of special funds. Chen and his collaborators are also accused of laundering the illegal income.

BEIJING, April 13 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Finance (MOF) said Monday that fiscal revenue fell 0.3 percent from a year earlier to 440.22 billion yuan (64.43 billion U.S. dollars) in March.     First-quarter fiscal revenue fell 8.3 percent to 1.46 trillion yuan, the ministry said on its website, while tax revenue shrank 10.3 percent to 1.3 trillion yuan.     Fiscal revenue includes taxes as well as administrative fees and other government income, such as fines and income from government-owned assets.     Business profits shrank as economic growth slowed, the MOF said, and tax cuts intended to spur the economy and the financial markets reduced government revenues. First-quarter business income tax revenue fell 16.7 percent.     China halved the purchase tax on cars with engine displacements of less than 1.6 liters on Jan. 20, and revenue from that tax was down 7.6 percent in the first quarter.     To shore up the stock market, the government cut the share trading stamp tax from 0.3 percent to 0.1 percent last April and scrapped the stamp tax on stock purchases in September. And even though the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index is up more than 35 percent so far this year, the tax cuts on share transactions meant a decline of 86.2 percent in revenue from that category in the first quarter.     Actual revenue amounts in each category were not released.     Customs tariff revenue fell 23.9 percent during the first quarter, the MOF said, without giving further details.     Central government fiscal revenue fell 17.7 percent in the first quarter to 721.3 billion yuan, while local government fiscal revenue rose 3 percent to 742.9 billion yuan.     First-quarter fiscal expenditures surged 34.8 percent to 1.28 trillion yuan, as both the central and local governments adopted a proactive fiscal stance to boost the economy and domestic demand.     China unveiled a 4-trillion-yuan stimulus package in November to be spent over in next two years, with 1.18 trillion yuan from the central government.     Fiscal revenue exceeded 6.13 trillion yuan in 2008, up 19.5 percent.

BEIJING, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin Friday called for actively promoting friendly religious exchanges with the outside world on an equal base but firmly stemming foreign infiltration in the name of religion.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks when addressing a seminar on religious work for ministerial and provincial level officials.     "The Party and the government have always attached great importance to religious work," said Jia, also member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau.     The CPC Central Committee has made "a series of major decisions and arrangements as well as new achievements in religious work, while the country's religious sector has maintained a united and stable situation," he said.     Jia, however, warned that officials should pay high attention to some new situations and developments in the country's religious field, along with the developments and changes in international and domestic situation, and deal with them in a proper way.     He called for firmly implementing central decisions and arrangements, going all out to safeguard harmony and stability in the religious sector, and making maximal efforts to unite both religious and non-religious people and encourage them to devote themselves to the socialist cause with China's own characteristics.     The workshop was organized jointly by the Organizational Department and the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee, the State Administration of Religious Affairs, and the National School of Administration.

BEIJING, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said here Sunday China is confident and capable of achieving its 2009 economic targets and will strengthen cooperation with the international community to fight the global financial crisis.     Despite the financial crisis impact that increased difficulties for economic operations, "the fundamentals of Chinese economy and its good outlook in the long term have not changed," said Li at the opening of the China Development Forum 2009.     China has set an 8-percent target for annual economic expansion this year after diminishing foreign orders dented exports and slowed growth to a seven-year low of 9 percent year-on-year in 2008.     To boost domestic consumption and growth, the government will exert itself to tackle issues of immediate concern to ordinary Chinese citizens such as employment, education, health care, housing and environmental protection, said Li. Firecrackers would sound sporadically.     As Saturday was China's traditional Tomb Sweeping Day, survivors of the quake-leveled county returned to what's left of their homes to mourn loved ones.     GRIEF IN QUAKE ZONES     More than 80,000 people were confirmed dead or missing after the May 12, 2008 earthquake in southwest China's Sichuan province.     One of the worst-hit areas, 15,645 people were killed in Beichuan. Another 4,311 others remain missing. Because of the destruction, the county has been closed-off since May 20 last year. For the first time since then, former residents were allowed to return for four days of mourning starting Wednesday.     Life forever changed for Zhu Xiuhua after her husband was buried under the county's vegetable market.     "He was considerate and diligent, earning 3,000 yuan a month to support the family," she murmured, eyes swollen.     After the quake, Zhu became the family provider, taking care of her parents-in-law and two sons. Although the local government gave her some subsidy, she now has to work at construction sites like a man.     Facing the debris of the market, she drew a circle on the ground with a stick and wrote the name of her husband.     "There were too many people who died in the quake. I am afraid he can't find the money I gave him," she wept.     Zhu then lit a candle and placed it alongside the pork she had cooked and set by the debris. Pork, was her husband's favorite food. She then burned ghost money- one sheet after another, as an offering to help the dead in afterlife.     "Don't worry about us. We can manage it," she whispered to him.     In Qingchuan county, flower seller He Xiantong brought a bunch of chrysanthemums to an earthquake memorial park in Donghekou.     "Somewhere in the county, 40 meters underground, lies my wife," he said. "I feel that we are so close."     At the same time, their son, He Kaiyuan, who is in Chengdu, less than 300 kilometers away, stands facing Qingchuan. He also bought flowers for his mother and placed them on the ground.     "Dad visits mom every day," he said. "Mom, dad is with you. You must be happy in heaven."     In front of the tomb of Tan Qianqiu in Deyang city, just north of Chengdu, many strangers stopped to mourn.     The teacher, from the Dongqi middle school, sheltered four students with his arms when the quake jolted the building. When rescuers arrived, they discovered Tan had died, but the students all survived.     Huang Jing, a girl who was from Hunan province, dedicated a bouquet to Tan.     "He is also a native of Hunan," she said. "Although he didn't know me, I brought him greetings from his hometown."     MOURNING FROM ELSEWHERE     In Fuzhou, capital of east China's Fujian province- some 2,000 kilometers away from the quake's epicenter- a ceremony was held for people to mourn victims.     In front of more than 100 people, two girls tied letters they had written to deceased relatives, to the legs of pigeons, then let them go.     "Dear little sister, how are you in heaven?" wrote 16-year-old Dong Yu.     "Does it still hurt? How are uncle and aunt?" her letter went on to say. Her cousin was just eight months younger than her.     "Mom still weeps sometimes, but there are so many people from Sichuan in heaven, you won't be lonely."     Together with 33 other students from Sichuan, Dong was sent to a vocational school in Fuzhou after the disaster.     "I am doing well here," she read, smiling, with tears.     People also chose to mourn the dead on the Internet.     "Chen Jian, I'm Xiaofeng. How are you in heaven?" This message was from Chen's wife Tan Xiaofeng on the website cq.qq.com.     After the earthquake, Chen, worried about his pregnant wife. He survived 73 hours under crushed concrete and twisted steel rods. He passed away after he was pulled out of the debris.     Netizens on the portal website Sohu, list his story as among the ten most touching from the earthquake.     "I miscarried," Tan Xiaofeng wrote.     After the earthquake she moved away from her hometown and went to work in eastern Jiangsu Province.     "I will be back to sweep tombs for him later this month," she said.     The website claims to be the first online platform for visitors to mourn quake victims on Tomb Sweeping day. So far, more than 7,000 messages were left by netizens. Photos showing touching moments during the quake and its aftermath were also posted.     On Sina.com, the page for mourning showed candles forming "5.12" and a white chrysanthemum. More than 2,373,000 people had visited the site as of Saturday afternoon. Some posted their own messages for victims: "There is no disaster in heaven," and "Hope the survivors can be strong and live a better life."     LOOKING INTO THE FUTURE     Outside the barbed wire fence around the collapsed Beichuan middle school, 15-year-old Lu Chunqiao closed her eyes and held burning incense.     Four other students nearby burned a letter. In Chinese, there is a superstition that if you burn a letter, you are sending it to the dead.     The ninth grade students then knelt down, keeping their foreheads close to the ground.     They survived the quake, but more than 1,000 of their classmates were dead or missing.     "We want to tell them (the dead) the changes during this past year," Lu said. "Construction of the new school building is to start next month."     About one kilometer away from the Beichuan county seat, work rebuilding Qushan township just began.     Amid roaring machines, Liu Chunyi, an engineer from eastern Shandong province said, "it is the greatest comfort to the dead tohave those alive live a better life."     In Wenxian county of northwestern Gansu province where 114 people succumbed in the quake, Liu Wencheng placed fruit and tea for his dead wife in a graveyard.     He told her that their two daughters were doing well at school.     Liu had 0.2 hectares of land, where he planted wheat, corn and potatoes.     "Life has to go on," he said.     After the quake, the local government sent him a quilt, food and electric blankets. Each affected family was also given 20,000 yuan (almost 3,000 U.S. dollars) for reconstruction. It was not enough to build a house which is why Liu still lives in a tent. He is not sure how long he will be there.     In Sichuan, however, there is a timetable.     The province vowed to rebuild all damaged houses in rural areas by the end of this year and those in cities or townships before next May.     More than 90 percent of roads and 98 percent of the power supply system would be restored by Sept. 2010.     But it will take longer than that for wounds in people's hearts to heal.     Many people suggested Tan Xiaofeng, who is just 26, should re-marry.     The idea just makes Tan cry.     "I can't accept another man," she said while shaking her head. "Not now."

BEIJING, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday again lodged urgent representations to the Russian Minister Counsellor to China in regards to the sinking of a Chinese cargo ship in Russian waters.     The Sierra Leone-flagged vessel named "New Star" sank off the waters near Russia's far-eastern port of Vladivostok on Sunday. Seven Chinese crew members were still missing.     China paid great attention to media reports that the ship sank after a Russian Coast Guard cruiser fired at it, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu in a news release.     Jiang said China had urged the Russian side to spare no efforts to help search for the missing crew members and make thorough investigations to find out the causes of the incident as soon as possible.     The Chinese embassy in Russia and consulate general in Khabarovsk also made representations to Russia at the same time, Jiang noted.     "Russia attached great importance to China's concern," said Jiang, adding that relevant Russian department is investigating the conduct of law enforcement agencies involved in the incident and will inform China of the results in time.
